Hello all,

Long time lurker, first time poster!

I bought my first spyderco(a G-10 rookie, serrated) a couple of weeks ago. I think I raised a blister the first night I had it from flicking it open so many times. I also have no hair on my left forearm. Which leads me to my first question: How sharp are spydercos, out of the box? Mine was sharp enough that it would shave, but it would only get a couple of hairs in a stroke. It took several strokes to completely de-nude a given area of my arm. Just so you know, being Thai, I'm not particularly hirsute. In any case, does that sound about right for NIB sharpness, or should it be sharper?

In any case, I still love the knife. I showed it to my dad, and I could tell that, by the way his eyes bugged, he liked it whole lot as well. So I bought him a plain edge G-10 Standard (thinking that it might be sharper). Well, it isn't really, and furthermore, it has a little lateral blade play. Which leads me to the second and third questions: Can you fix lateral blade play by tightening the allen nut on the hinge, and Is this normal for a NIB Spyderco?

If it matters, I got these from Smoky Mountain Knife Works - 40 for the rookie and 42 for the standard. Since these are such relatively low prices for the knives, do you think that there might have been something wrong with the stock? I really doubt it, considering what I've read here on the forum abut Spyderco's quality control, but these experiences have me a little confused. In any event, I still love my Rookie and have an Endura on the way.

Thanks for reading,

prin

Welcome to the forums Prin ! Great place to start your first post too.

Almost all af the Spyderco's I've gotten over the years have been extremely sharp, right out of the box. The hair on my arms literally jumps up and runs away at the site of one of those Spydie boxes!

You shouldn't have any lateral blade play at all in your knife. "Sal & Company" usually go to the extremes to make sure that the fit, finish, edge, and lockup are perfect. Occasionally I suppose something less than perfect slips through the cracks. ( It's the law of averages)

I'm sure if you'll contact Smoky Mountain Knives or Spyderco, either one will take care of any problems you have. Both are very reputable companies.

IMHO I've found that Spyderco backs their products as good or better than any other manufacturer today.

Good luck... and welcome to the "addiction" of Spyderco!

Welcome to the forums and the world of Spyderco. Once bitten you can never turn back. I agree that the spydies are extremely sharp out of the box(probably the sharpest out of the box)in my opinion. I also agree with the lateral blade play. Contact Spyderco and they will take care of it.
Once again welcome
Eric

Angela....

Didn't mean to be picky. I did the same thing and he caught me in another thread and pinned my ears back. Besides, I need a few more posts to stay ahead of him.

I have only one Spyderco, an older Endura. When I got it, I got an SOG Autoclip at the same time. Got rid of the Autoclip due in part to the kind of play you mentioned. The Spyderco (serrated) cut like a scalpel. It was really scary. I've managed to dull it quite a bit and re-sharpen it a few times, but I haven't matched the out-of-the-box sharpness it had. The Spyderco is still pretty tight, and I just found out that I can send it back to the factory with $10.00 and they will grind off the nub from the plastic clip they used to have and put on a stainless clip. Sounds cool to me, and they said they would refurbish it, too. I would call that pretty good service.

Hey Chinook and Angela -

Does your ear still ring with the sound of
the BLILIOUS in it?

Anyway - somebody said that my name has a funny meaning somewhere - well - laugh all you want - as I said earlier - I have been called worst and for all the right reasons.

I am a white man, a lawyer, I ride FAST bikes, shoot guns and collect knives - how worst can it be??

BTW - my family name can be dated back to 1492 - when the Jews were deported from Spain - My family fled to a small island called belelwa - or something like that - hence the name.

Well - you started it Chinook...

Hello Prin
Welcome to the club.
I am a fellow Thai. Have just moved to Thailand for the first time 6 months ago.
Was delighted to find a nice collection of Spyderco's available here.
I am finding out (you too it seems) that once you start with your first Spyderco, its hard to stop.

Blilious.....

What's in a name?
One meaning for Chinook is a hot wind that blows from the north, and I'm definitely full of hot air.

(double posts are sneaky counters)

Chinook - I liked the remark in the end of your posts to begin with.

Your last post reassured me that anyone capable of making fun of himself can't be all bad

We could take this to a private email debate - but this is much funnier and it gets us posts - right??

BTW - the double post technique is wicked - but unintentional..

Chinook,
Living in California I'm sure that you experience the cousin of the N.West Chinook; the Santa Ana,....a hot dry wind from the mountains. I can remember the fires from them as a kid.
Dave
P.S. Welcome new member.

Dave....
No fire danger now, rained yesterday (a lot) and more tonight/tomorrow. Flash flood watch has been issued for the burned off areas from the Santa Ana wind season. Some call them Santanas for desert winds. I live "below the canyons" as they say, and they can be fierce. Hot, dry, full of pollen from the high deserts. Dry, itchy eyes, cracked skin.

I lived for awhile up near you, Seattle, Bellevue, and near Longacres. Beautiful state. Getting ready to move to southern Oregon coast pretty soon. Gonna need more Tuff-Cloth (requisite knife content)

Blilious....
I'm glad you accept my offhand humor. No malice intended, believe me.
