Hey guys, I've never really done any knife making or anything before, but I have this rusty old machete that i'd like to restore, it only has half of the handle left with 3 pins going through it and the blade to the other side

Any idea what the best way to get the pins/handle off so I can clean up the blade? I gave them a few whacks with the hammer but they didn't budge, not sure if they are just rusted on there or what

Thanks!

Saw/grind/file the exposed ones flush with the tang and pop off the remaining scale with a knife blade wedged in between though wood and the tang. If they resist, use a punch to knock them out.

Then, once you have the blade cleaned up and get some new handle scales shaped you can get some chicago screws from your local hardware store to attach them. I restored a machete last year and they worked perfectly.

Search here or on youtube for Nick Wheeler's sanding video. You may need to fabricate a sanding stick, but if you watch the video and make a stick, and buy a few sheets of wet-or-dry sanding paper, then you can have that machete looking like new again.
