So, I'm definitely new to the knife collecting world. Here's a little back story of how I got started. I received a Kershaw Scallion as an X-Mas gift while I was in college. That was back in 2005. It was perfect, I loved it, and I def. used the heck out of it. A few months ago, the blade lock broke, and the blade was pretty beat up as well. I decided to send it back to Kershaw to have them fix it. I needed a new knife while it was away getting repaired, so I hit amazon and started looking around. Did a little research, and saw a knife that I thought looked pretty cool, had really good reviews, and was fairly cheap. I went ahead and bought it for around $25 bucks I think. It was a Gerber Remix Tactical. At this point, I had never heard of Blade Forums, but as I browsed more on the internet, I ended up here, and I haven't looked elsewhere since. Its interesting to see so many people here who dislike Gerber. The Remix I bought is a good little knife, the only complaint being how hard it is to open. I'm used to the Scallion, where a little flick with your finger and the blade flies out with a vengeance. The Gerber Remix? Not so much. Other than that, I can honestly say I like the Gerber, it suits me just fine for now. Anyway, rambling back story over. I still haven't gotten the Scallion back from Kershaw yet, and have been researching on here what to get next. I wanted something with a good blade, light weight, relatively inexpensive, and easier to deploy than the Gerber. Thanks to many hours of browsing, and the positive reviews of many members here, I ended up deciding on the Kershaw Skyline. I just got done ordering it, and should have it by Sunday thanks to Prime! I'm super excited, and will post some pictures on Sunday when it comes in. Although, I'm sure there are probably 2000 pics of Skylines on here, so I doubt anyone will be interested! Here is a short list of knives that I will be adding to my meager collection in the near future: Emerson CQC-6K, Ontario Rat-1, Kershaw Strobe, Ganzo g717-OR. I'm excited to try out different manufacturers and test them all out. Any thoughts on the list? Any others you guys would recommend? I'm leaning toward the Emerson CQC-6K because it has a frame lock, and I've only owed liner locks so far. Anyway, thanks for listening!

I'd throw a spyderco into the mix.

That's on the radar for sure, but I'm still trying to come to grips with the look. To me it's one of those "faces only a mother could love" situations. I know me, and can guarantee I'll get the urge to see what all the talk is about and order one in the near future. What's a good starter into the world of Spyderco?

For a spyderco, I would recommend the delica. Its a great knife and made me relize what the spydie fuss was all about. Welcome to the forums.

Look into spyderco. If you want a knife thats easy to deploy and looks cool thats the way to go. Depending on how much you want to spend they have so many different knives in different price ranges. Look into the manix lightweight. Looks cool, you can deploy it fast, close it fast, its light. That was one of my first knives, awsome knife.

I thought the same thing at first, they look weird and i would never buy one, but once you try one youll love it. No turning back.

As far as Spyderco, judging from the price point of the other knives on your list, you should check out the Tenacious, and the Persistence. Those were my first spydies, and I still have them. That says something.

By the way, I think the CQC-6k is a great knife.

Not sure if you ever heard of kershawguy.com but he has some pretty good deals. Picked up a skyline last week for $25 shipped. Also got the Damascus skyline for $47.

Welcome aboard, you're off to a great start, Kershaw has good knives.
Always remember that here on BF, knives are like boobs, even though we've seen them before, they're always fun to look at:)

Spydercos to try:

*Manix 2 in S30V or S110V. They are truly high value knives, and let you check out steels that are used in the blades of knives that cost multiple hundreds of dollars (Striders, Chris Reeve Sebenza and Umnumzaan, Hinderers, etc used S30V or S35VN in many versions).

*Delica or Endura -- VG-10 is a very user friendly steel. Decent edge retention, easy to sharpen to a great edge, nice corrosion resistance.

*Native 5 in S35VN. These are just stupid awesome. For my tastes, S35VN is the perfect mix of maintainability, edge retention, and corrosion resistance. The Native 5 uses it with a nice full flat grind and a light and appropriately hand filling package.

I find that those knives live in a price range where you get performance value over less expensive knives, and aren't likely to get a truly better performer by paying more. I have a $385 knife in my pocket right now, and I'll be the first to admit that it's no better from a performance standpoint than my Manix 2. On the other hand, that Manix 2 blows away my Kershaw Clash and Spyderco Persistence (each in 8cr13mov steel).

Greatest quote ever! Thanks all for your feedback. A Spyderco is def being added to the list. I'm leaning toward the Native 5 because I would love to try some of the more exotic steels. I sharpen everything on a Lansky system. Will it handle the S35VN?

++1 on the emerson/kershaw collabs. I have almost the whole set of them and theyre all super badass. Ive got a real emerson, and ive gotta say, the kershaw emersons are very close in fit and finish especially at a tenth of the price.

The kershaw oso sweet is an "oh so sweet" knife. It was my first kershaw.

Spydercos are also sweet. check out the gayle bradley.

+1 Native 5! It's phenomenal, and yes your Lansky will handle it fine.

The Skyline came in yesterday! So far I'm very impressed with how light and smooth this knife is. I've retired the Gerber I was using and replaced it with this as my EDC. Here are some pictures:

I tried doing this from my phone. I hope it works.

Off to the quote thread with you!

I'll make a suggestion I wish I would have gotten more of when I was new to knives, or at least when I could purchase on my own.

Since you already have a lower end (yet very good quality) folder, save up and get something the next level up. Maybe something in the $60-$80 price range, or even better, something in the $100 + level. Reason I say this is because it helps to understand the differences in quality. While you won't get the instant gratification of getting a new $25 knife every few weeks or once a month, you learn to appreciate the value of a higher end knife.

Now let me add to that that price does not dictate quality as there are lots of great value knives out there. There are many higher end knives I won't own b/c of quality issues. But there are many amazing knives out there that you will not get to understand if you stick with lower end knives.

Some guys would rather have 15 $25 knives, while I'd rather have 3-4 $100 - $200 knives that cover a wide range of carry conditions. A bunch of $25 knives every few weeks adds up to a Sebenza in a few months. Just saying. So it really depends on the kind of knife collector you are.. quantity over quality or vice versa.

Just wanted to say thanks for the advice Hawk. Instead of buying a bunch of cheap knives all at once, I decided to get one expensive knife. I ended up with a ZT0770CF that is an absolutely amazing knife. If I hadn't heard Hawks advice, I would have spent the same amount on 4 or 5 cheaper folders and would have missed out on one hell of a knife. Thanks again for the good advice, if you're ever in Atlanta, I owe you a beer.

I love my 0770CF. Wonderful knife.
