first real knife advice

Al Mar makes a few knives that might be worth checking out. They are all very well built while most are not 'big and bulky' at all. While they may not use the latest, greatest steel (their vg-10 works just fine), the fit and finish on them rivals and sometimes exceeds knives costing much, much more. As your dad isn't a 'knife person', he'll probably appreciate the build quality more than he'll miss not having the latest steel that will be yesterdays' news in a few months anyway.
