A few weeks ago a friend gave me an old pile of rust to give new life. It was an old "Ranger" knife without a handle. All the handle had in tact was the aluminum butt cap which was pinned on. The rest of it was filled with rust pits. The knife has a "wishbone" (?) tang which means it's not quite full tang. The middle of it is not there, like somone took 1/4 inch out of a full tang. I decided to make the bolster in one piece, as well as the wood (walnut) and the butt cap. It had red spacers.

I learned SEVERAL new skills with this one including soldering with silver solder. It took a few tries, but I got it.

I know the blade isn't perfect, but I didn't have much to work with. All in all, I am pleased with the way the handle came out. He'll get the knife back tonight and I hope he is pleased with it.

I welcome thougths, comments, criticism, and suggestions as I have one more just like to work on.

Nice job, looks good!
I have done some paid restoration work on WWII knives and a some free repairs for folks. For the time invested and money, it's hardly worth the effort but it gets your name out there.

Thanks guys, I really enjoyed this. He did give me another Western hunter in same/worse condition that he used to stir molten lead with, so the tip needs a new HT. It should be interesting to see how that one works out.

I'll post progress pics when I start that one.
