I'd like a really deep/dark wood, with average amount of grains that can get very dark, and also a very light wood with minimal grains.

I've tried looking through a lot of burl lists and wood pics, but I figure you guys all have endless experience with what finishes bring out specific colors and shades.

If I can't find the right contrasts, I might just go with an off white micarta and a black denim micarta. I don't really want to mess with micarta for my first handle though.

i have some hard maple that has just a little wave to it that I really like to use. has that nice plain look but the color is great compliment to shiny steel. As far as dark wood you can never go wrong with american walnut (with no sap areas) finishes great and gives that "old school" look.

I use East Indian Rosewood and maple quite a bit.

Wenge might be a nice choice.

Here's a handle I worked out for a collaborative project.

I've been cutting up one of my gunstock blanks, this one's 200-year old bastogne. It's been air drying for over 30 years. Never got around to making a stock out of it, and now it's scale-fodder. Emphasiski, if you PM me with your contact info and the dimensions you need, I'll send you some. You can owe me a favor. There may be some other stuff just as good, but there's nothin' better than this stuff.

Yes I got the visitor message, so that's working. But you didn't provide dimensions and contact info

Fletch- yes I'll sell some, but I need to make sure my level of membership allows me to sell things and then I should post it in the proper forum. Checking around a bit, it looks like $20/pr for 2"x6" figured wood scales seems somewhat normal. Are those dims good for you, and how thick is normal?

I didn't want to leave it on your visitors message for anyone to see. I'd prefer to email it to you.

As for dimensions, probably just average scale size, or something close to 1.5 x .75 x 6".

Oh I didn't realize those messages were public. OK I'll email you tomorrow. I'll be cutting scales over the weekend. But 3/4" is thick. Your handle would be 1.5" thick plus the metal thickness, minus however much you waste with sandpaper. I'll send you one piece 3/4" thick and you can butterfly it.
