Well, after some good coaching from moonwilson, I went ahead and ordered my first S & M and received it to today. I should have done this earlier! Very well made knife! The jigging is also superb! This won't be my last S & M knife!

It's a S & M Series XVIII Sowbelly in Pennsylvania Brown Berry Worn Worm Groove. Sorry about the darker photos. I likely to use natural light and it has been foggy and overcast here all day. I think in one photo you can see where the Berry part of the color comes out. It is hint of an almost ultraviolet blue in the bone. Quite nice.

Very nice looking knife. Hang on to your wallet. Those S&M's can be addictive.

That is some beautiful jigging!!! That is a awesome knife. I have a few S&M's and enjoy and carry each one as much as possible. They will be around alot longer than I...LOL!!!

S&M sure does make a fine knife. I have a couple and can't say enough good things about them!

Great knife! I only have one S and M, it's mop doctor's knife and is one of my very few safe queens. I do take it out for some regular fondling tho.:D

I've had 2 S&Ms. Very nice fit, finish and action. I kept the 1095 harness jack, but gifted along the 420HC mini-jack. If they upgraded the usual stainless they used, I would buy up a bunch more.

Schatt & Morgan is a terrific knife with a rich and excellent history. You made a good choice.

Enjoy................

Your pictures make those scales really sing. I have never owed a Schatt.... I may look into them more seriously now. Great looking knive, congrats!

Nice images there texasflyfisher! I'm crazy about mine as well, and hope to see more of these old patterns in the future:thumbup:!

I told you so! :) Schatt & Morgan makes wonderful knives! That sowbelly is a sweet pattern. I think yours looks even nicer than mine- the bone on mine is much lighter, almost a blonde color. Congrats! I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Thats a beauty texasflyfisher ! How did I know Peter would post his too :D Those are fine knives

Sweet.. Is that one ATS-34 ?
When ya get a chance, hows about a picture of it with the blades open.

Nope, the blades are 420HC. I wish that knife was made in ATS-34! For what it's worth, S&M does a pretty good job with its 420HC. It takes and holds a good edge.

I've wondered why Queen doesn't use fancier steel on the regular Schatt & Morgan line. I'm guessing it's to keep costs down. I think most of what you're paying for with Schatt & Morgan is the superb fit & finish. If they were to go with higher-grade steels on the smaller knives, the street price might go up well above $100 for most models. I would be willing to pay that, but perhaps their core customer base wouldn't. (this is just raw speculation on my part- please don't quote me)

Actually Queen has used 3 different steels in their S&M Annual Reproduction Series knives. They started out with 440A (Queen steel) for the first 5 years, and then in the 9th & 10th Series they used ATS-34. I believe it was used in the "main blades only" in the 9th series. The rest of the Annual knives have been 420HC. And of course most of the File & Wire knives are ATS-34.
Here is a stockman from the 9th series that I just picked up off the net.
She's 3 3/4" long, 5/8" high & 1/2" thick, closed.

Thanks for the information, I didn't know about the 440a. Blech!! On a knife of this quality and price, they should have used something much better.

You can add a fourth steel, 1095, which they occasionally use. I have a Harness Jack in 1095 from S&M that I absolutely love. They, or Queen, do a fantastic job tempering 1095.

For knives of this quality, I'm surprised there isn't more D2, ATS-34 (this is just a small percentage of their offerings), and 1095. I love the action on every S&M I've ever handled, and the F&F is really well done. I look with admiration at their many models, but I won't buy any more of the 420HC--I bought one in a Small English Jack and hated the performance (again, for the price point). I gave it away because it just wouldn't hold an edge even as well as my less expensive knives.
