"I nocked the tip off by accident.... oh well. Anyone have any hints on restoring the tip to closer to its original "shape?"
I never sharpen all the way to the tip until all the rest of the blade is done. I then use a Sharpie to blacken the edge including the tip. I then make a few light passes up to the tip till all the Sharpie black is gone. Since the blade is thinner at the tip you need less force (fewer passes with your hone) to get it sharp and won't have to worry about rounding off the tip...
Here is a better picture of the tip to help visualization. Although I have been known to round of tips this time it was mainly due to the fact that I went off the end of the tip and when I carelessy pulled the stone back I nicked off the tip. I have been much more carefull since!
I am ok with the tip it has now. It seems stronger, although the old tip was nice for picking out splinters and glass and such.
