hey guys. finaly got the leather and stuff to make a sheath for my first knife. never tried leather work b4 and think I did pretty good. theres a black mark on the back from the clip I used to clamp everything in place till the leather dried. I had some saran wrap and paper towel there but I guess the water got on there and back down under somehow but it's the back anyway so :jerkit: well what do you guys think? ? :thumbdn: ?

ahhhhhhhh...there they are! I like the design. I can't seem to see the stitching very well. Do you have a close up of the stitching?

srry crappy cell phone pix I'll get better ones with the real cam once the batteries are charged.

also, did u click the thumb? it goes to the full size image....

I'll address the two biggest mistakes. One is I see no welt to protect the stitching which is unsafe.Second is the pouch should be much deeper. On pouch style sheaths, the handle should protude only about 1 1/2"-2" max or less. Again I say this for safety for not only the knife but the user as well.Go study some in the sheath forum, and you'll get it.Dave

just posted new pix taken with a much better camera lol.
there is a welt, just crappy cell phone pix made it hard to make out. I agree that it could come up a bit higher on the handle of the knife just a rook mistake I cut the leather to the same size as the paper pattern I had made... didnt account for the thickness of the leather and viola!! It is formed quite tightly, and I cant shake the knife out holding the very tip and shaking upside down (over an old blanket).. I know once it breaks in some it will get looser but if it's too loose I'll make another

When you make your paper pattern, only draw half of the pattern. Cut the paper along the line, and then fold the paper at the soon to be centerline of the pattern. Now use the already cut part of the paper to cut the other side of the sheath pattern out and you'll get perfectly straight lines. Basically cut half the pattern then fold it to cut out a mirror image on the other side.

I say this, because the loop in the back is all lopsided from what appears to be you trying to freehand draw that folded back piece for your belt loop.

Another good way to make a pattern is to take a manila or peechee folder and draw half the pattern onto it so the spine of the sheath is at the fold in the folder. Then just cut out along the line you drew, and presto! You have a nice stiff pattern perfectly pre-folded for you. Then save the sheath pattern (with the belt loop and/or welt piece) with the knife pattern (if you used one) and you have repeatable results. It helps to make the pattern and cut the leather just a skosh oversize to allow enough room for the leather to fold around the knife and leave room for the welt. You can mock it all up with the pattern. Nice work for a first attempt, by the way...
