I have never done any type of leather work, sewing, stitching, pattern making or anything of the kind. I had made the knives for my adult sons and the sheaths that came with them were...not good. So I dove head first into sheath making. There were a lot of lessons learned and I know have a better idea of what to do next time. I finished the leather with neetsfoot oil and beeswax.
Be gentle or even roast away, I learned a lot and really enjoyed the process!

Hey that's an awesome start man. Keep making them!

I need to find some time to use the supplies I've invested in to make a few.
I intend too! I really enjoyed the process! They are glued and saddle stitched so if anything falls apart it shouldn't be the edges!

A fine beginning - my suggestions, buy better leather, look at a lot of designs then do your own after, based on fuctions required of the knife. All the Best moving forward!

I agree, this was just tooling leather I found at Hobby Lobby. I wet formed them with a vacuum sealer, a great idea in theory, execution, not so much. Again, a learning process. There are a lot of things I will do differently. These are bushcraft knives and my sons and I hate having things just flop around like the original sheaths did that came with the kits. The blank splotch on the one is where I had some glue spill and I didn't realize how badly it would affect things. Again thank you!

Good work! They're much better than any of the leather sheaths I've attempted to make. Keep it up, and consider that there are lots of resources here on BF and many excellent leather crafters here who might be willing to offer advice.

Be glad to help.
Thank you! I am slowly building my leather tool kit up. I have a diamond punch, an awl, creaser, various sewing needles, artificial sinew, some clips to hold the pieces together, and I am sure Im missing something.

What is something you would recommend?

for hand stitching leather, I don't think there's a better thread on the market than Ritza Tiger thread

Contact cement. I prefer the green can (water based) from DAP, Weldwood is what they call it.

Ya bet easier on the brain then many others. Works better too.

Probably need an edger too. I use #2, #3, #4 the most. Osborne’s are good place to start. If just one for right now probably the #2

On Dave's suggestion I bought some green Weldwood last time I was in the US. He's right, it works great and your head doesn't get all spinny.

For tools, I'd suggest an stitching groover. It will make straight lines for your stitching to follow.

I used an awl for punching holes for a while but was never able to get good lines. It upped my game immensely when I got a set of stitching chisels. I use a 4-prong, a 2-prong and a single prong. Follow the lines from the groover and it is much easier to get impressive looking stitch lines.
