I got my first Spyderco today in the mail and I have a question about it. It's the Delica with the British Racing Green FRN scales and ZDP-189 blade. I got it off of evil-bay from a seller with good feedback. It looks to be new in box, very nice fit and finish etc but all it came with is a Red and Black sliding box, bubble wrap sleeve and a piece of black foam. Is it normal for Spydercos to come without a warranty card or other paperwork?

thanks, Carlos

As a side note, I can't believe I've waited so long to get a Spyderco! I've always looked for knives with the "Spyderhole" for opening and didn't realize until recently it was even called the spyderhole, let alone a trademark feature.

Most of my new Spydies come w/o paperwork. Some knife models (Sage, D2 sprint runs, etc.) do have some explanatory paperwork, but AFAIK Spyderco doesn't do CRK type paperwork with every knife.

Congratulations on the ZDP189 D4. That's a favorite model and blade steel for a lot of folks.

Thanks for the info. Didn't seem to be amiss but thought I'd ask. The ZDP189 D4 is what I decided on getting, after reading a lot of posts on this forum when considering my new EDC.

New question: What's a Spyderco that's larger, more substantial in the hand, has a +3" blade, a liner or frame lock (at least one hand closeable) and capable of tip down carry? I like the feel of the Delica a lot and I am planning on carrying it everyday for at least 6 months, but I usually go for a bigger knife.

Thanks, Carlos

endura :D but its a lockback
if not go for the military (liner lock), its not very heavy though, if that is what youre looking for
the military carries only tip down, its one of the best knives spyderco has to offer
it screams of quality engineering, ergonomics and reliability

Military, para military, or the Tenacious. I'd go with the Endura (even tho it's a lockback) and position the clip to make it tip down.

The Millie has already been mentioned, but I'd certainly second that choice. There are several variation from which you can choose. The G10 Endura might also be an option for you if you like flat ground blades. The blade will be close to 4" and the clip is 4-way so you can set it however you want.

The only thing that doesn't fit your specs is the lock. It's a mid-lock as far as the positioning is concerned, but I've never had any trouble closing Spyderco's mid-locks with one hand. That's what I do with my Caly 3 all the time.

If you want to try something different but still one-handed, the Para-Millie is my fav Spyderco. The compression lock is really neat and works well with either hand for me.

even if the lockbacks can be easily closed one handed, the liner lock closing has a more natural move to it, so il stick with my recomandation for the military in that regard

For me the opposite is true. I close my lockbacks much more easily and safely with one hand than liner or framelocks.

Either way I'd still recommend the Military for a larger knife. There are many steels to choose from and it's a wonderful design that meets your requirements. The Tenacious and Police 3 (Police 3 is tip up only I think) are also worth a look.

Carlos,

Slide open the box, then look on the underside. You will see the warrenty info.

I dont think any of my spydercos came with paperwork. Nor plastic cover for the knife. It was just kind of laying there between the box and the foam.

I also love my paramilitary but dont let friends borrow it or the edge will come back chipped.

Yeah, I normally keep a FRN Delica in my truck, just in case somebody needs to borrow a knife. I cant stand to hand around my top-shelf knives... people dont respect knives, sometimes.
