First Spyderco (disappointed)

Amazon tapes the boxes on any product that has the potential to come open when thrown into a tote filled with other products of varying size and weight and flung along on a speeding conveyor belt. Things tend to open up along the journey from pick to pack.

If a new knife is not a little stiff, I get worried.

I agree. I prefer to break it in myself.
OP, some sharpening and a lot of openings should result in smooth and sharp. Unless there's manufacturing defect, then you can send it back, either to seller or Spyderco directly.

Yeah I was kind of disappointed with mine last week as well. I ordered the Ti Damascus Endura and the grind is off on one side. Only maybe a mil or so but you can tell both in where the damascus starts in relation to the core metal forming the edge and also the ridge left where the grind line meets the spine. It's very stiff opening but I haven't really done much with it. I just threw a little lube on the pivot, tied on a paracord fob and ordered a PM2 which I could not be happier with.
