First Spyderco

That seems an unfair criticism. It's a tribute/Spyderco version of a Pattada, not meant to be a 1:1 production. It's also a well liked model. But alas, no accounting for different tastes!
Don't see how it is an unfair criticism. You pretty much repeated everything I said only with topspin. :D
To each his own. Which I also said.

As far as tributes, Some tributes don't need to be made. There is a reason we don't see Victorinox making a tribute version of a Fairebairn-Sykes fighting knife. The knife is not improved by adding a fork, spoon and corkscrew. Similarly, the Spyderco Pattada does not work for me for a couple of reasons.

1. The look, the knife in no way captures any of the elegance and grace of an actual Pattada.
2. The features. The traditional Pattada does not have a pocket clip, liner lock, G10 scales, or even stainless steel. (traditionally they are damascus style blades)
3. This is really the main issue I think - the Name. Calling it a Pattada is essentially an insult to true Pattada knives. It is not even close. Want to do a tribute to a Pattada and make a knife based on that style? ok, that's fine. IMO, calling it "the Sardinian" would be far more accurate and far less objectionable and mis-representative of what true Pattada knives are about. Like I said in an earlier post, it is a decent enough knife, and in fact better looking than a lot of other spyderco folding knives. Just not a decent version of a Pattada.

Putting it another way, what would you think of a "tribute" Loveless drop point knife, made with 420 steel, hammered finish, cork handle, level tang, and aged brass bolster and hilt?

I get the sentiment (I kinda feel that way about most of the Spyderco ethnic series, esp. the bowie) but have you read the official Spyderco take? (pdf link)
It seems like they were hoping to do what you're suggesting...

Well, that's a Very Nice looking Spyderco fixed blade,
with great steel, as well.

I agree with a custom leather sheath from Horsewright Horsewright ,
his work looks amazing.
-Since you clarified that the main
thrust of your thread, however, was to basically bash Spydercos,
comment on Spyderco's folders being butt ugly across the board
knife has to look like a finalist in a Miss Warts pageant.
- I felt it necessary to mention some Spyderco folders that require defending against such 'harsh' descriptions, albeit somewhat rare collectibles,
to name a few, like the
Jess Horn, Viele, Gayle Bradley Air, and the Kopa, with the sixteen handle scale variants, such as Cocobolo, Micarta, Corals, Pearl & Abalone, Turquoise, Black Quince, Jigged Bone, other exotic Bone, Stacked Wood, Carbon Fiber...
-Some others that one would Not
even recognize as a Spyderco.
Anyway, I'm sure the my fellow Spyder-co-llectors can add to the
ones I've mentioned.

-Enjoy your Sprig, it's a beauty...
I'm sure the custom sheath will
make it 'just right'
-Uh Oh...You've been 'Spyderbit' :D

lol. Well played sir!
And to be fair, I wasn't exactly bashing spyderco knives. I willingly admit they are great knives as far as construction, usability, action, innovations, etc. My only argument against them is one of aesthetics, which when you get right down to it is nothing but personal taste and opinion. For me, The Sprig is a great looking knife as well as a high quality one. Have yet to see a Spyderco folder I can say the same about looks wise. Quality-wise, I have no argument. And as I noted previously, I am clearly in the minority given the size of spyderco's market share. That's ok. Not the first time I've been the lone voice crying in the wilderness. :D

FYI if the name is of such importance to you, you should know the proper name for a Sardinian folding knife is resolza, and specifically a knife from Pattada is a resolza pattadesa.

Incidentally patada is also Spanish for 'kick' and slang for arse whooping :P

Actually I did know about resolza, et al. :) Pattada is a town on the north central part of the island of Sardinia. 2nd largest island in the Mediterranean if I recollect rightly.
As far as arse whooping, i think it fits. Resolza Pattadesa does kick Spyderco Pattada's butt. :D
