I am getting my first Spyderco in a few and I was wondering what you guys would recommend? The knives I am looking at are: Military Plain Edge, Para Military Plain Edge, D'Allara drop point, Delica ZDP Plain edge, and the Caly 3.
Any thoughts? And thanks ahead of time :)

Welcome to BladeForums!

Much will depend on your particular uses for the knife.
For example, the Delica's 3 inch blade and lockback design will be useful for different purposes than the Military's 4 inch blade and liner lock.

If you care to say, what in general will you be using the knife for?

It will probably be my EDC, so it would be used to lots of different things (I do landscaping). I am looking for a good looking knife that can stand up to a good deal of punishment :P

And thanks for the welcome :)

in general I find longer blade lengths more useful, and as your job sounds knife-friendly, go for the military. It's easily available, has secure lockup, grippy scales, a beautiful blade shape and big opening holes. you may want to consider the serrated version if you're cutting sod or if the blade is going to be run along stone or tiles.

Yah if I got one of the bigger bladed knives I would most likely get a half serrated version.

I feel like everyone who wants to get into Spyderco should have a Delica.

Not to mention it's very light and grippy if you do landscaping.

I got a Delica 4 the other week for my EDC. I am an industrial designer and it gets used frequently for cutting various materials. It's just what I want for that type of work.

There is a store near me that has a special on now, I can get a Delica and Endura , both waved, for only $115. So I think it is between that and a Military

The Endura is a great choice.

It's the one I'd recommend for a first Spyderco purchase in an "all-purpose" knife.

Personally, I would take the bargain pair for $115 and start there. The Delica and Endura are the core of what Spyderco is all about. They make knives with better F&F, they make "gents' knives", they make really tough and functional survival knives, but the Delica/Endura series will show you what the company's core values and traditions are. See how you like them, and then go from there in the direction that you want.

I would also like to suggest the Endura, if you can live with it i would get the "wave" model,
The Endura is a great knife, everything you can ask from a first folder.
I have a lot of Spyderco's, and the (waved) Endura always seems to be the one i carry.

Thanks for all the great and helpful feedback :) Will be ordering my new spyderco today!

Jay does indeed have a great deal on those. You couldn't deal with a nicer guy.

Military and Para-military are going to be easy to clean because of their open back design - something that may be a consideration if you're using them for gardening related work.

The lock on the military is probably strong enough... but the lock on the para is stronger again.

I know you've probably already ordered your new knife, but I can't help thinking a SpyderEdge (fully serrated) , IE; Endura, would be your best bet. SE knives stay sharper longer, cut fibrous materials easier, and contrary to urban myth are much easier to sharpen than plain edge knives on the Sharpmaker as they take only one step to get back the edge. As you wont be able to stop at just one Spyderco knife:), try a SE Spydie next, you'll see a big difference, performance wise. I only carry SE Spydies for the above stated reasons. Enjoy your new knife!

Cheers,
Rob
