First stab at reprofiling; Muddy content

So I made a stab (haha) at reprofiling my first Busses. First pic is two Muddy Meanies and an AD. Top Meanie is stock, bottom Meanie and AD are both re-done. Second is a closeup of the AD.

Lessons learned? Well, I can do a MUCH better job with an EdgePro than I can by holding a diamond benchstone against one of my Sharpmaker stones. (The latter technique is why the coating on the AD is messed up for 1/4" past the bevel.) I know they ain't pretty, but I'll get them cleaned up eventually.

Anyone else got any semi-embarassing reprofiling pics? :)

That bottom one is actually the best. I bet it really cuts now.

Once you start to use or sharpen a knife, smoothing of the blade coating which is for looks anyway, becomes instantly irrelevant.

Good job!

What's wrong with those? :D:thumbup: they look like they'd cut anything!

wow! i dont think missing coating looks bad. that ad looks wicked, and ready to be stripped!!!

was this all done by hand, or on a wheel? how long?

A little more on that AD and you'll have a scandi AD:thumbup: Just kidden, but the scandi's do slice well

They look great and look very sharp!!!

I've recently done what you're going through. Nice job, but, it looks like you might not have completed the job on the Meaner. The tips are a bitch. I just had to "re-reprofile" my DWMS because of that darned tip!
Can you please take another photo of the tip of the reprofiled Meaner so I can tell for sure? On the close up of the Meaner, the tip is cut off, so I can't tell.
- Thanks
P.S. It looks like you may have a "double bevel" on the tip of that Meaner.

Thanks for all the kind words. I think they are functionally okay, but you can still see lots of scratches, so it's not quite "mirror perfect" yet.

hawkinsa21: It either takes a lot of balls, or not enough brains. I'm leaning towards the second. :D

Troop: Here's your photo. What you saw in the first photo was just where I didn't polish the tip enough (green arrow), but when you zoom WAY in, you can see that I did miss getting the very very tip. :o

MORIMOTOM: All done "by hand" if you mean no powered tools. For the AD, I started off with a DMT coarse diamond stone held to the stones of my Sharpmaker, with the stones in the 15 degree slot. I spent a LONG time working like that, and it was pretty ugly. I then rethought the whole situation, bought an EdgePro Apex, and had better luck. I started off using the EP 120 grit stone, then moved up through to the 3000 grit tape. All in all, I think I maybe spent 5 hours on the AD... but I wasn't timing myself. I'm probably going to end up taking the MS down to 15 degrees or so too, but don't want to dive into that quite yet.

Yup...just as I suspected! :) The same thing happened to me. It probably won't affect the cutting ability to any noticeable extent, but, try this just for fun. Slice a piece of computer printer paper, and see if it "hangs up" when you get to the "bad spot". (start slicing from the choil end of the blade). If it hangs up, then, to me, it's a "noticeable effect". If it doesn't, you are good to go. When I first did my DWMS, it hung up where I didn't do it right, so I had to re-do it.
 Great job, just do yourself a favor and don't get frustrated and say "screw it". Don't worry about those little scratches...but, I would re-profile that tip, though...that would irk me to no end.
Oh, yeah...the AD looks really great; good job.
