Inspect the knife for flaws to make sure I'm going to keep it. Then I remove the pocket clip if it has one. Pictures are usually next in line followed by some fresh lubrication for folders whether they need it or not.
Hide it from the wife until I think it's safe to bring it out to play with... so when I'm asked "Is that new?", I can honestly say "no, I've had this "for awhile".
I never really gave it much thought but I honestly think after looking at it I always see if it shaved arm hair. I’ve done this since I was a kid. I hate to say it but I don’t know if I own a knife that I haven’t done this to.
After checking sharpness and shaving arm hair, I flip the pocket clip to the lefty position. It's not my knife, until it's configured for a Southpaw. If the pocket clip isn't reversible, I won't buy it.
