Hey all. My birthday is coming up and, knowing my love of knives, my girlfriend wants to buy me a new knife. Awesome. I've been thinking about it and I realized I don't own a Becker yet. So that's what I'm going to go with. I've been doing some research and I'm down to 3. The BK2, BK7, and the BK10 Crewman. I do a lot of hiking, camping, kayaking, and bushcrafty things and I just don't now what to go with. I'm thinking the BK2 because it's smaller but the BK7 and BK10 look so darn cool. Haha. What do you guys think? Any advice would be appreciated. Even if you think something other than a Becker might be better. Thanks.

Beckers are great bangs for the buck. For me..
1. BK10
2. BK2
3. BK 7

BK7 is too long of a blade for me. I prefer 5-6" blade for most hiking/camping situations. BK10 over the BK2 due to I like the jimped thumb ramp that the 10 has. I find it useful and comfortable.

Bk10.

Or actually the bk16.

I own the bk2, and now after owning it for a few years, realize id rather have the bk10 (which was out of production when I got my bk2). If you want a larger knife, id skip the bk7, and jump right to the bk9 (I love mine).

But really, the bk16 is the one I wish was available when I first got into knives. It really is that perfectly usable size range, and would be what id prefer to carry for most of what it sounds like you are wanting to do.

Good luck choosing, but the upside is they're all great :).

10 or 16!
If you want a 'big' medium-sized knife, get the 10. If you want a nimble medium-sized knife, get the 16.
The 2 is for the bunker. The 10 is for the woods. :D

Of the three you mentioned, I'd go with the BK16, the BK12, or the Bk24...pretty much in that order :)

To address the 2 vs 7 vs 10 question.
The two is a big knife in a small package. You seem to be drawn to the look of the 7 and 10...take a look at the BK17 (if you haven't already) - it's blade is about 3/4" shorter than that of the BK2, it's thinner, and has a look similar to the 7 and 10.

The 2 is a beast. Quarter inch think and heavy. Great knife but would not call it "smaller". If hiking I would prefer something lighter or for that weight carry a longer knife. But that is just my preference. But since it hasn't been said yet: you can not not have a 9!

Why do I always have to be the voice of reason?:foot: seriously, just buy them all :D but take the advice of everybody here in the order of which your purchase. With Becker you can't go wrong. :D

If you want a big knife for outdoor use go with the 9. If you want something that can sit in a vehicle for emergency's / SHTF but can also be used outdoors go with a 3. If you want an all around good camping knife... look no further then the 'campanion' itself the 2 (or if you want a little more blade the 12). You want slicey? go for a 5 or 15. You want EDC? 11 has a bottle opener, the 14/ 24 do not but they are also great size for anything you can think of. Want a medium sized EDC blade that can handle some pretty hefty chores? go for a 16 or 17. The 7 is a great 'all around' knife but is too big to be comfortable for some tasks, and is not big enough for others. It makes a great combat / do everything blade.

And no one has mentioned the 4. I can't stress enough how much of an incredible general outdoors tool the 4 really is.

You know what...

You can't not have a 4 !!!

Credit that one to CM_Rick

Unless you're a big guy, the BK2 will probably be too heavy. It's smaller but weighs 16oz!

BK10 has a .25" longer blade but is 25% lighter.

BUT ... for a birthday gift, go for something really special ... the BK12 Doug Ritter RSK Mk2 Perseverance

Just going to throw my .02 in here. As the BK12 would cost just a few dollars less than a BK10 AND a BK16 together, I would recommend getting the 10 and the 16 and paying just a small amount more. After all, 2 Beckers are better than 1. If you're just going for a single knife, that makes it much harder. I'm very torn between my 10 and my 16 as to which I'd prefer. If you don't need a big knife, you might consider starting small and get a BK14. It's not as big as the others but it's a great blade. If you prefer the bigger blades.......either the 10 or the 16 will serve you well. As was mentioned, the 10 will be a bit more "beefy", and the 16 will be a bit more nimble. Both will likely do whatever you need for the activities you mentioned. Again.......whichever you pick, you'll be happy with. You won't go wrong with either. :)

Girlfriend?? Put a ring on that, bro!

Back on topic: I own a 2, but I just don't use it as often as my other knives because of the thickness and short length. It is a great knife, but for what I do, I always seem to grab something else. I'd really like to try a 10 and that is what I'd recommend to you. For a lot of tasks it is an ideal length and it is thinner and lighter than the 2.

I'm not a fan of the 10; though I know a lot of people are. I think it's the combination of the height:length ratio, and the clip point. I do have one - but only because I came across a Camillus version at a great price - and holding it in hand didn't change my opinion.
My first choice for a fixed blade of that size costs twice as much as the 10...and doesn't come with a sheath
My opinion, though, really is irrelevant, as you (OP) have already expressed interest in the BK10. If it appeals to you, you'll probably like it. (If not, send it to Silver Needle)

I'll take your logic in a slightly different direction:
Let the gf buy you the BK12...you buy yourself a BK16 and BK24. You end up with 3 great knives. Just know that you'll still have to buy a BK9 in the not too distant future.

Because you can't not have a 9.

Ultimately don't think you'd go wrong with any. I don't own a 7 or 10 (I've handled a 7 before). But I love my BK2. It is so much knife for what you pay and can do quite a bit.

Agreed.
Nothing wrong with the 7 - I've been using mine again recently, after letting it sit for about 18 months. I've called it the awkward middle child - too small to play with the big kids, too big to run with the small ones...but trying to do both. I won't recant that description - but I will clarify that the BK7 is not an awkward knife to use.
