The steel is W2; it was normalized three times, hardened in tough quench at

1450fh. Tempered twice for two hours at 450fh.

The false edge's, radius, was cut, using a round file with a safeside;

Then finishing the rest on the grinder.

The finish is taken to 1500 grit, then flash etched in ferric chloride.

Ricasso to tip is 8".

I used the heat treat coating; PBC,from Brownells for the first time on this blade. It works well. very little scale left on the blade.

Satinite was the clay used for the differential hardening.

Fred,
I haven't been using as much W2 lately, but after seeing what can be done with it, I'm reconsidering. However, you just raised the bar up quite high. Very nice work!

What took you so long Fred???

Very nice looking blade!

Thanks guys and thank you Don for your ht input. There was no movement at all when quenched. I am always cautious when hardening something with this fine a point. I did the three normalizings in a row just before the quench.
Nice steel, from forge to finish. I'll be using this again soon.

Great blade, Fred! I had the pleasure of Ron Claibourne (Bowie) spending a few hours in my shop today. Wish you had been here, too! ---Sandy---

Nice & Sweet Fred: Outstanding blade work. Would like to see it also with the handles on, please post when you can. Thank again for posting it. A+--------------------

Hi Sandy,

I would have enjoyed that. Hope Ron was doing well. Was he delivering one of his fine presses?

Thanks Terry,

I'll be forging the guard today.[ wrought iron ] Then checking out the wood supply to see what I have in stock.

I really enjoy making these big fighters.
