This is my first time making a knife handle and also my first post, though I have been lurking around here for a long time. I will use this thread to document the process, and also as an avenue for constructive criticism and general information (hopefully).

Firstly, I would like to get some input about the hardware used with wood handles. I would like to avoid using the hex nuts on the backside of the scales, but I would also like for the scales to be changeable, so epoxy/pins aren't ideal for me. I like the ESEE scales and hardware, but these sales will not be flat enough to simply use a countersink bit and flush mounted hardware. Furthermore, I don't think this wood is hard enough for that, but I could be wrong.

Any ideas?

Dude, drill your holes, before you size it to the handle anymore. And don't use a beautiful piece of wood for your first set.

That's a nice chunk of wood. Normally I tell folks to sand one side dead flat then drill your holes. Then run your screws through the wood and into the tang of the blade. After that I trace around the outside of the metal onto the wood with a sharpie. Only then will I start trimming to size.

That wood is insane. Hope it it works out nicely for you. Listen to Oregon...I wish I'd had his advice when I started a set for my BK16. Still trying to figure out how to salvage that job.

What type of wood is that?

Of course you know what it is! I am nominating Warrior for president. Dubz2016:D

I'm guessing Dubz knew cause he said it just right in the first post.

Those scales look awesome man! Can't wait to see how they turn out. For some reason I am imaging them with copper tubes instead of screws holding them on. In my mind, it looks like it would be awesome!
