Welcome BlindRef,

I have no experience with this company. The khuks look nice, but the only way to find out for sure is to use one.

I would put the quality of the Himalayan Imports products up against any others. Bill Martino stands behind his products 100%, and you won't find a more honest or accomodating person anywhere.

Maybe some of our UK brothers have bought from this company.

Make yourself at home here, and enjoy your stay.

Steve

if you enlarge the pic of the 'current special service issue' khuk you can see it has a chipped wooden-looking handle. (even though it says its made of horn?)

I don't know whether I can help you or not. I have read just as many reports on different khuks as I could. I've looked at khuks in stores and the gun shows in Austin TX. I was interested in khuks a long time ago but, couldn't get with the program for a long time. I have used a lot of different knives. I'm in Uncle Bill Martino's age range. I wish there would have been one of these HI khuks when It was time for me to head for Nam.

I have never used a knife that is made of better materials, made with more skill, or more attention to detail. Having covered a lot of ground in my life time I doubt very much if you will find another knife dealer that will put this quality of hand made knife in your hand for any where near the price that Bill Martino does. The Gentlemen who make these knives are the creamn of the crop and, I don't know how in this world they produce such a beautiful tool with next to nothing to work with.

I can not imagine anyone being disappointed in one of the knives from HI. Even the tempering is amazing. Hard where they need to be and a gradual softening where they should be soft. I've used mine enough to tell you they will carry there own weight any where you want to take one.:) :)

Hello and welcome to the cantina !!

I have been a member for a year and some now and lurked for ages. I have bought many khuks from Uncle Bill and would love it if there was a UK supplier but alas. I've looked at this company before and the are called "ToraToraTora". The guy who owns the company is called Simon - very nice chap. These khuk's are about 1/4 inch thick at the bolster and thus much smaller than HI khuks, plus they don't have Uncle famous backup and customer care. For the same price you will get a far better khuk from HI but expect to pay about £30 on customs - they always want their pound of flesh. Sometimes they don't charge and sometime they do.

All said and done, you can't go wrong with HI and I would recommend a BAS as your first Khuk. Pick up a nice blem and then get ready for HIKV !!

hehehehe

:)

Welcome, Blindref. If you want a khuk, (later you will "need" them):) , you have come the right place. There is no other place for this kind of quality and service. Nuff said.

Ben

Welcome to the Cantina!
Those khuks look nice. Lood alot like the ones Lalits crew at Khukuri House make. Their khuks are good, but not near as nice and polished as the ones from HI. Edges of the blades tend to be softer, had one chip(kinda dented too) on the edge where the same type of khuk from HI wasn't fazed at all.

Those handles look really small in diameter. Just like them gurkee nifes in that sporting goods store.

What does Uncle Bill charge for shipping to the UK?

In this day & age of cookie cutter crap, you have to remember that each & every khukuri sold by Himalayan Imports is unique; no two are alike because each is hand made to the company's specs. When you buy one of their khukuris, you are buying a khukuri made by the best kamis in Nepal. Add to that the fact that Bill Martino is absolutely as honest an individual as you can find & you have an absolutely unbeatable combination. Best knives I have ever bought or used. The Himalayan Import warranty is absolute. You are dealing with the best when you deal with Himalayan Imports.

It sounds odd I know, but after a while, you start looking for little things that say these knives were handmade one at a time by a man, a master smith. A slight bobble here or there. Because something af the smith's heart and soul went into making it.

I took a look, and they look, well, not up to par with HI. In addition, if you take a look at the sheaths on them, the stiching is inconsistent and almost looks haphazard. In addition, the handles, as were previously mentioned, don't look too great. Another point of interest is the pricing. Out of curiousity i checked out the standard KaBar USMC knife, which go for 53.95. The kukri's they sell go for between 45.95 and 76.95. That just doesn't ring true to me. A good handmade khuk should be more than that, and if it isn't, then one there is something wrong with it (bad quality) or two the kamis making them are not getting their fair share. I would much rather buy from a company that I know supports the kamis and Nepalese, and is possibly the most quality/customer satisfaction oriented company I have ever had the pleasure of doing business with. Theres my two cents, if it's worth even that:p . I have only one knife from HI, an 18 inch AK, and I use it all of the time, for everything from clearing trails, to chopping wood, to clearing deadfall, to killing snakes. It is, without a doubt, the first in a long line of purchases for me from HI (limiting factor being a poor college student, but the ROTC stipend should take care of that next year....I think a khuk a month sounds about right:D).

Quad

(OT: My Gunny joking accused me of trying to compensate for something when I showed him the khuk...apparently his was much smaller).

blindref,

Welcome to the Cantina.

If you want a nice massive hand made khukuri then HI is the way to go.

But first let me give you the standard warning we provide to all newcomers:
1) Once you buy your first HI khukui you will probably become infected with the dreded HIKV (Himalayan Imports Khukuri Virus). We haven't figured out how these diabolical kamis do it, but, they have a way of infecting you so that you start buying khukuris like potato chips.

2) No matter what you may read nor hear, you should avoid the one who is often referred to as the Duck, alias "Saint", alias "Kukri####", alias "Tisimi". He "ain't" no saint and he is plagued by the dark side of khukuri research. Beware of the duck! Beware the duck!

Those look like pretty nice Khukuris. But I think one would really have to hold both one of those and a HI side by side to really compare. I am interested in when I get my HI Khukuri-to compare it to the high quality ones I bough when I was in Nepal. It is nice to have the HI warranty standing behind the HI Blades. Much the same as BUSSE Knives.

As to the price, remember it is in Pounds not Dollars-when converted into pounds the price is about the same as HI.

Ranger:

not quite, but you are right its not too far off. What I was referring to more was the price they were charging for KaBars. Granted they ARE imports over there, but still, if you pay more than 35 or 40 bucks you are getting ripped off here. I doubt that the duties and taxes are so high that it causes them to be so much.

Quad

edit: the same duties and taxes would most likely apply to the khukuris as well, so you would expect them to be marked up appropriately.
