Whats up good people. First time poster here but a long time lurker. I am usually on the hunt for older folders, and found this little gem at a pawn shop the other day. I payed 7 dollars for her because the blades were a bit wobbly. It appears to be an old queen jack knife. I put her in a vice and got the blades tightened up and sharpened. It happened to be bitter knife dull.

I have a quick question for all of the knife gurus here. Does anyone know the rough years of production of this knife, and how can you tell if a queen is a carbon steel blade or stainless.

Thanks ahead

You can tell if a knife is stainless or not by checking if it patinas. Stick it into a potato for a while and if it goes dark grey then it is carbon. Attempting to force a patina will show you if it is stainless or not. Sorry but I can't hazard a guess as to the production years. Looks nice though.
James.

Ate an apple about an hour ago and just pulled the blade out I use it again. It has a a bit of rainbow tint on the blade my guess would probably be a carbon steel blade.

Thanks that info was very helpful. It's been a great little knife the week that I have had it. It seems through the years that it has lost some of its snap. But still has many years of life left in it.

Welcome. Congrats on the find.

Welcome to the forum and I would say found a good one there. Hard to beat Queen for quality.

Welcome. That's a nice looking knife at a bargain price. I am sorry I don't have an insight on this knife.

If your knife is 3 3/4", it's a #18 Heavy Duty Jack. The #18 is made with a spear main and the #10 a Clip main. You got it for a great price. Welcome to the forum.

Your guess is correct, Slide. Welcome to the addiction... and the Forum!

Close enough....Queen states that the heavy jack is actually 3 11/16", not 3 3/4" as I stated in my previous post. I'm guessing your knife was made in 1976. What's interesting is the long pull. I've never seen one on the heavy jacks I've seen.

EDIT....I did some checking and the long pull spear blade was used on Queen's Electrician's Knives. I have one and the tang stamp is identical. I can't be sure but your knife could be an early heavy jack that was re-bladed with an electrician's spear. Your knife also has Rogers bone which was found on early Queen knives. I don't believe Queen used Rogers bone in the 70's. Lots of Winterbottom bone and Delrin in the 70's. Still a nice knife and a steal at 7 bucks. The Queen heavy jacks are some of my favorites.
