First Time Spyderco User, Which One?

If you need a knife that you can open fast for Self-Defense, then the Waved Endura 4 is fine.

If you need a knife for Utility and that can also serve in the Self Defense role, then I suggest the standard Endura 4.

I just suggest this because of the wear & tear the Wave can have on your pocket. Additionally, if you carry a Waved knife other than your pocket you might not be able to open it in it's intended manner.

I'm not faulting the wave mechanism, I will probably be looking at a Waved Delica 4. I just think that for your 1st Spyderco it might be good to get a standard model. If you do like it, and I'm sure you will, then you can buy more.
 
The wave it the fastest way of opening a folder. The main difference between carrying a normal and a waved Endura IMO is the fact you have to carry a waved Endura tip up and that you have to stop the blade with your finger if you do not want it to open with the wave. You can still open it using the hole like a normal Endura. The seams on all my RF pockets are ruined by the addiction but mostly by the clips. I doubt the wave made it much worse.
