Hi everyone,
I recently got a few pieces of damasteel to make a knife for myself with. The usually work with O1 for my folder blades and have used some ATS-34 in the past as well. The damasteel I got still has the scale on it and I have been having a lot of problems getting rid of it. I have gone though 2 60 grit belts trying to grind it off and I still haven't gotten rid of all the scale from some of the deeper layers. It seems like the steel either hasn't been annealed or is hardening as I grind it. Trying to run a file over the ground surface it won't bite at all. It is nothing like working with the ATS-34 I have used in the past. Is this usually the case with damasteel or do I have some harden steel? I have never used a powdered technology steel before and have only made about 20 knives so I am still testing the waters with a lot of my knifemaking. Has anyone else had these problems before and what do I do to stop it from happening? This damasteel is expensive stuff and if I am going to have this many problems with it I don't think I'll be using it again.
