let me start by saying any advice is helpful a few months ago I bought some 1/8th inch flat stock of O1 through my work at a local tool and die shop. the tools I have access too are mills, lathes, a disc sander, and a larger band saw, but my primary tools after I profile it are files mainly an 8 inch double cut bastard and a 6 inch single cut. Are there any techniques that I should employ to make things easier for me especially for the primary bevel. I will have pictures up of the design and the knife after the profiling is done.

just go for it.
Mark the bevels and the ricasso lines. Remove the bulk with your grinder or disksander and clean up draw filing. Then hand sand

when I grind it how thick should I leave the edge before the heat treatment and what type of sand paper should I use when I go to hand sand it(also where can I get said sand paper)

The tutorial on "How to make a Knife" has all that in great detail. If you haven't read it, it will help you a lot. If you have read it, read it again, as there are things that don't sink in the first pass.

Slong0928 shoot me an email before you get started, I have a few things that might help you. woodandsteel.biz(at)gmail.com

so i have been reading posts about the different sand papers my question is is there really any difference in the types of Aluminum oxide sand papers??

Buy good quality sand paper. 3-m is good. Norton is OK. I like to buy from the auto body supply store rather than the hardware store whenever possible. A good sheet of sandpaper will cost 2-3x as much, but will last 5-10x as long.

Edit: It seems Rhynowet is the recommended paper around here.
