After recieving this Rough Rider congress in a giveaway (thanks again to Lars), I decided to carry it in my pocket for a week or so, along with a small scrap of wood. Whenever I got a chance, I worked on my little whittling project. So here we go:

I know it's nothing compared to what some of you guys can do, but it is my first try. I'm thinking that with my collection of knives, I've got to take up whittling, just so I get to use them for something other than just opening the mail.

My first thru, Hummmm, not sure what I am up to now, Lets just say lots, have been highly succesful, as kindling and tooth picks. What I am trying to say is, Very good job! Steven

I have done a lot of "nervous whittling" (you know, nothing else to do..!) over the years. I thought you chain looked great!

How did you like that Rough Rider? Stay sharp for a reasonable amount if time? Did the blades get wiggly?

Robert

Great work

Yeah, I'm kind of thinking the same. Time was, when I had plenty of work for my knives. These days, a lot of the time, I'm increasingly having to invent stuff.

Watch out you will soon have many wooden chains, Ball in Cages, spoons, bowls, etc laying around. I think I have whittled a 1/2 cord of Basswod in the past 12 months. If I get low on Basswood I get nervous! Nice chain, I broke my first try.

Thanks, everyone.
The rough rider stayed sharper than I thought it would. I only had to strop it from time to time, though I used a pretty soft wood. (a Rose of Sharon died in my back yard, and I picked up a piece of that.) No wobble in the blades at all. Only shortcoming was in freeing up the chain, I wish it had a blade with a finer tip to get in there. But I wanted to stick with using only the one knife.

Thanks for the link, Omar. I know what I'll be up late reading, now.

Nice chain links, r8shell. All the more admirable because of the one-only tool!!
I have been working on a spoon, but found I had to use several tools.

looks pretty darn good to me, I've been thinking a similar thing and have only made a few piles of wood shavings :)

Really nice chain r8shell!
My first looks nowhere near as nice as yours, and I always seem to break links.
Nice that you completed it with one knife, too!
Look forward to seeing more of your whittlings :)
