First whittling attempt

Very nice whittling!!

I have been meaning to get some basswood or something soft to relax and do a little whittling on - lord knows I have plenty of knife options.....

Thanks for the picture and inspiration - beautiful knife, too!

nice links!! much better than my ball in cage attempt which resulted in wood scraps.

So I gather basswood is a good wood to get started with whittling? I assume it's relatively soft. Everyone is so encouraging, I may have to head down to the hobby store tonight and see what they have.

Yep. Basswood is technically a hardwood, but it is soft enough to carve easily and the grain is fine so it doesn't fight you constantly. Some of the pine I've used was a real battle between what I wanted and what the grain wanted to be. Nice job on the chain links.

It is indeed a good wood to start with. It can be frustrating trying to whittle dry, hard wood, until you get some experience, and more tools. Bass is a great one-knife wood! Cedar is good too, as long as your blades are razor sharp.

You have inspired me to post my carving project also (separate thread), r8shell - I thank you!

From a Rose of Sharon in the back yard. It's more a bush than a tree. Largest trunk might get to a few inches in diameter. I just wanted to pick something off the ground in the backyard, and it was the only thing that wasn't all cracked. Besides the mesquite tree, and I'm not about to start with that!
