As the title suggests. I found a tutorial on how to carve a wood spirit, thought I would give it a go. I used a piece of Red Bud that I cut down with my BK9. That's some hard stuff. Too hard to carve really. Not the greatest, but not bad for my first. I wanted to use one of my Beckers for my first one. The jimping I made on my Remora was really cutting into my finger, lol. Did the 13 do a good job at carving? Well, good enough, I guess, but a carving knife has a very short blade. Anywhos, took a couple of shots. Forgive me for not getting better photos, but after 3 hours of carving, I didn't care much about photo quality.

Thanks guys. I would like to learn how to do it better. I'll probably end up getting a good wood carving knife, and a better/softer piece of wood. When I get better, maybe I'll start making those walking sticks with the carvings on them.

Dude! That's really great, nice and symmetrical... great work for a first-time carving with a tool that's not really designed for carving. Now all your wood spirit needs is a forced patina, an aggressive reprofile, jimping, and micarta.

Well done, my friend, well done.

That looks like my splinter.

Seriously nice work.
It is. :D Thanks.

Thanks brother, appreciated. I have a few things in mind when I get better.

Well done, my friend, well done.

Thanks moose, appreciated.

Now do it again with your BK2!

No, seriously, great job. As soon as my Mora carving knife arrives, I'm gonna get the good basswood from the shop and start whippin' up some wood spirits! Basswood and willow are my favorite carving woods, willow can even be whittled wet and won't split while drying - at least a couple of spoons I made from willow didn't. Have fun, and remember to wear a leather glove on your left hand to protect you from your blade.

Thanks meat. I do need to get a good glove. From what I read basswood is an excellent wood for carving. I watched a guy carve a spirit using it, and it carved smooth as butter.

I call one!!! :D

Thanks guys, appreciated. I can draw fairly well, and even though it's not 3 dimensional, it comes in handy. I like the new medium. I'll have to get a decent carving set up, and some good wood.

I found these quite helpful.

Warrior, just go cut some green branches, about 2-3" in diameter, willow or poplar. Seal the ends with wood glue, leave to dry. By November, you should have a decent stash of nice carving wood to get you through the winter.

In Berlin, there are bass trees (do you say that like that?) on the side of every road. Sometimes you happen to be lucky and come by a tree maintenance crew who are cutting thick branches off, be nice and you'll get more wood than you can carry.

Gotta ask my grampa for permission to cut some basswood on his property... there's one tree that we cut down every 2 years or so, the branches grow about 9ft a year.

I saw those videos. That's the ones I was telling you about earlier. That guy is quick. The carving knife he's using is the one I want to get. I found one for $95.
