First work in the new shop! (with pictures!)

You're clearly missing the good old fashioned tool haulin' truck! :) Would a 40lb tank do it? You'd have better luck fitting that into your available vehicles. What kind of forge are you getting that you expect to have eat so much gas? I gotta say I highly recommend a blown forge from Darren Ellis. I was forge welding today at 5psi and forging at 3psi.

All that being said, you might be able to get a gas company to deliver LP, but they'll likely either want to lease you a tank or charge you a yearly inspection fee for your tank. Just remember that if you are carrying LP bottles around full that you should carry them upright.

Make sure you post pics of your new forge!

I ended up buying a Chile Forge Habernero. Same one that Sierra bought. It is a venturi forge, but they did some playing around at my request and came up with a setup using a single 1/2 inch burner swapped out for the dual one inchers that at 3 pounds, will hold at HT/annealing/normalizing temp +- 5-10 degrees indefinately. Makes my life easier. :D Hopefully, this thing will eat less gas than my NC, but refills on 20's at $15 to $21 (on whether i want to drive to Lowes or just go to the nasty little conveneince store up the street) get old after a while. I may get a big tank put in once i get my shop built.

I used to use the 100 lb tanks, the gas company didn't charge any for the tanks, just to feel them. I now have a 300 gal tank behind my shop. Gas cost about half per gal when the truck comes out to fill it, compared to the small tanks. I have also found a blown forge uses less gas than the other.

Joe, real knife makers drive pickups :D

hey dek since i couldnt get my but out there how bout some more pictures
like of that steel you been working
did you test etch it yet

Nothing yet. I did get it drawn out to 12" or so, cut, reground, and welded to 14 layers yesterday. Today was moving day for Mom's stuff (and I still have workshop space! :) ) so nothing new today. After the next round I'll grind one side and do a test etch, but right now I'm having too much fun just welding and mashing :D

I have decided that the hammer NEEDS a 1HP motor. I keep stalling the 1/2HP one and it's getting too hot as it's overloaded (and only running about half speed). Anybody have a 56Z frame, or other 56 frame base mount 1HP 115V motor they want to sell cheap? :) Otherwose it'll be $100 for a new motor so I can use my hammer :(

Pics after the next forging session...

P.S. I still haven't welded up that second billet Butch. If you hurry it may still have your name on it. If you DON'T hurry you have to prep the next one :p
