First XM, and a question.

I finally got my first XM. Very exiting for me! It's a 3 inch slicer, non-flipper, all tumbled with a blue/black scale.

It's a lot more compact and lighter than I expected. I don't mean lighter as in not sturdy, but after reading and looking at all the pics I was picturing this small anvil. I like it a lot!

The only other quality knife I've had was a small Sebenza (which I wish I didn't sell), and while it's similar in size (from memory), I don't see how people could really compare them. They're too dissimilar. And so I don't intend to!

My initial thoughts: I almost wish I'd sought a flipper. I love the slim/sleek profile, and so much so that now I'm just curious as to what the flipper is like. ...... Wanting to see the spanto now, too. Only one is in my ballpark, so I'll have to wait and hopefully spot one in be wild! (It's a cruel world isn't it? Heh)

Anyway, just thought I'd share a bit of my excitement with you guys. Part of the allure of Hinderers for me has been this community. And thanks to the few people that have answered my questions via PM!

And a question: the first thing I did was go to switch to tip up carry. Turns out, the clip will not fit into the cutout ok that end of the knife. The filler tab fits in both, but the clip is a hair too wide. Has anyone had this happen to them?

(I emailed Rob, and I imagine I'll hear back from him beginning of the week. It's not an urgent matter and I've heard they're a *little* busy... And it IS the weekend.)

How much wider is the clip from the clip hole width? Any possibility a tiny amount of sanding on the edge of the clip could do the trick?

I'm sure sanding could fix it. It's hard to tell just how much metal would have to come off. Can't be too much as it fits in the other side. But I'd rather wait for Rob. :)

Welcome to the addiction. Use a little lube and force it in (pocket clip in the space) you ain't gonna hurt it. WD40 or breakfree whatever.

Includes anodized titanium XM Pocket Clip & Filler Tab
Stonewashed finish with electro-anodized color
Compatible with all XM series folding knives
Some slight fitment may be required on GEN 1 and GEN 2 knives
* More colors are on the way!

Straight from the RHK website...might your knife fall into this category?

Mine is new and 3" so I assume Gen. 2. It's not an anodized clip, though. It's the stock clip.

Anodizing doesn't add any dimension its just like an egg dip coloring. I believe they just ano the factory clips so the dimensions should be the same, with that being said why do they need to be fitted? Maybe Rob or Rick will let you/us know. Rob is great getting emails returned. If no answer is found here I'd be interested in hearing the response from Rob. Maybe some of the others with 3" XMs will chime in and let us know their secret...

Yeah. I'm expecting to do what Rob says. I was curious in the side to see if in a first in this. Hehe

I haven't heard of it (that certainly doesn't mean it hasn't happened), I have heard of very snug filler clips but not that a pocket clip wouldn't fit. I have seen the Hinderer crew make very minor adjustments to snug clips when building knives.

Tolerances on these knives is very tight, measured in 1/1000" so I certainly think it is possible, I would imagine your clip is just a fraction too wide. Obviously you should wait for Rob's response but, if you are the self sufficient type, you could easily touch the long edge of the clip with a file (or sandpaper) and easily get it to fit properly. I'd hit it at an angle to taper the edge. Either way, good luck, you'll get it sorted out.

By the way, in the 3", I prefer the non-flipper version typically.

I also have a new 3" non flipper.(also just put on a blue/black G10). My clip fits a tad loose in the tip up position - in that there is an ever so slight bit of side to side play at the turn up of the clip over the stabilizer position until you tighten down the screws. No big deal at all. I would suggest sanding the clip a bit for fit. It won't take much at all.
I really think you'll be happy to have a non flipper in the 3" model. It's a very special knife & SO nice to thumb the blade slowly open & snap it home gently. :D
B.

Ease the edges (ever so slightly) at a bevel angle. Little lube.
They are ALL Great, in a 3" a flipper is nice.....keeps the flanges where they belong (behind the blade edge) ;)

He said to mail it in. I'll have to cut something today before it goes in the mail!

Actually he said to either mail the clip in or file/sand it down myself. He also noted their unavailability because of the current show (wish I could go). So I have a bit of time and I'm contemplating doing it myself. What grit paper would I use?

Side note: wow the g10 is really really grippy. How does it compare to the frag scale? I might be able to stand a little less abrasion, heh. Since the titanium scales are scarce, I;m contemplating a frag scale.

Get some wet/dry sandpaper from auto parts store.
See what they have. Moderate grit, this isnt going to take much.

Moderate: 320 - 400 grit. (Nice to have a variety on hand 220,320,400,600) but then if you want to have some for edge maintenance you can get some 1000,1500,2000,2500.....
Sheets are cheap <$1
Ease the edge of the clip and keep checking your fit, shouldn't take much.

Done and done. Looks and fits great. Thanks Rubi. Saved Rob and I some postage costs, too.

Congrats on a great knife. Non-flipper is best for 3", IMO. And you don't want a Ti scale. Really you don't. I have enough competition for Ti scales as it is :)

Glad you solved the problem. Now cut something. Open your bills, that is always a good way to start off.

Hey, I did say I was considering a frag scale (I meant frag G10) because if the competition for Ti. Carry on ;)

And I've been cutting lots of stuff. I don't have enough knives to not use what I've got. :)

Good Job Robert! Probably didn't take much sanding I would imagine! And now you're even more closely bonded to your XM since you fixed it yourself!
