A lot of firsts for me here.
This is the first knife I've done from start to finish.
First sheath I've done tooling on.
First HT and Temper.

It's certainly not without it's issues. I learned a lot and hope my next will be 10x better.

Steel is Aldo's 1084
Scales are sycamore from Burl Source
OAL is just over 6.5" and the blade is about 2.75"

You can see some scratches towards the tip. Still need to rub them out and polish up the blade.

My first attempt at a tapered tang. Hard to see from this angle. Also the shadow makes the butt look like it's really off, but it's not.

Another shot of the tang. This was also the first time I used black epoxy. You can see where it soaked into the unstabilized wood, giving it a dirty appearance on the inside.

Back of the sheath, and you can see were the black epoxy filled in my pin and thong holes that I didn't drill as nice and straight on this side. :o

I think that looks pretty darned good for number one. Why the black epoxy in the first place? The tapered tang looks great. Was that the .25" 1084? The sheath came out super--all a really nice package!

I used the black epoxy because I wasn't sure how the black liners would sit and I didn't want any visible gaps. I guess clear probably would have worked fine in retrospect. Yeah that was the .25" 1084. It was a lot of grinding to thin it out to where I wanted it.

The sheath was fun to make. Chuck Burrows' DVD helped imensely on that.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Well, the first knife sure is a learning experience! The clear epoxy w/black spacer worked fine on my knife--it will be the last time I use the 5 min. stuff, though.

Your blade looks great--I left mine way too thick--it will take a shaving edge easily, but does not cut material well. I've gone back to thinning it out some more which is, I'm finding, much more difficult after HT.

Where did you get the DVD on sheath making? I'd like to check that out.

Michael
