Fish Hook Size for Survival?

providing Aussie sizes are the same (I actually would not have a clue of they are!)...

I would go a No. 6.

I carry a variety of hook sizes and styles. Including a monster of a hook to use as a gaf, wet and dry flies, a couple of lures, a couple sizes of treble hook and several trout to bass sized hooks. My entire fishing kit fits into an Altoids tin and includes the variety of hooks, weights, spiderwire line, leaders, swivels and other stuff.

I agree with longbow, I carry an assortment of hooks, and several flies and bobbers....you can make a great small fishing kit out of an altiods can..or even a 35mm film canister w/o the bobber

A large fish can be caught on a small hook, but it is very difficult to catch a small fish on a large hook. I have a few # 8's in my PSK.

I agree with the small fish hook way of thinking. I carry some small gold hooks to catch little fish for bait or food. You can eat 3 or 4 small fish if you don't catch the big one.

I would go with size 8 or 10, preferably 10. If the fish can't get the hook in it's mouth, you aren't going to get the fish in yours.:p

I think that it would depend on where your at. The reef fish in Hawaii have pretty small mouths and you would have to use a 15 or a 16 for those. :)

Go with a small hook. I have done enough fishing in my life to know that, if you are hungry, the only thing you are going to be able to count on catching is small bluegills. The big ones bite when they feel like it.

There are tiny fishhooks that are forged in Japan that were built for taking carp. I've used them on catfish and they do work if you don't try to "muscle" the fish in. The forging process also makes them incredibly strong. They are size ten and much smaller. Look for them in a fly shop. You can store them on a magnet - much better for keeping track and the magnet could come in handy for making a compass.
