After pacticing a few recent traps I got to thinking, would adding large fish hooks to the noose improve the chances of making a capture ?

I'm thinking adding a few hooks would help secure a wriggling animal and maybe even snag them if the noose missed them as it closed.

I realise that this would be a horrible death but I am talking about the use of this in a desperate survival situation only.......what's ya thoughts ?

I think treble hooks would up your success rate, IDK about single shanks. In a legitimate survival situation of course.

In a real "life or death" situation, you do what you have to do. Think of what the 600 lb bear is thinking when he is hunting you (hypothetically). He not worried about how bad it will hurt, he just needs to eat.

If you had to do it for survival, I would not blame you for trapping animals with a hook. You may want to contemplate the inverse: while you are not in survival mode, what can you do to relieve animal suffering?

Ron Hood's video on traps opened my eyes to the use of hooks (in a survival situation like you said). He showed how a fish hook could even be used to catch birds.

For 'recreation' traps, yeah, that's harsh. But if it cones down to eating or not, hook on brotha.

I think fish hooks are an essential piece of equipment for all outdoor activities whether you use them or not. I keep a few small ones in my PSK, I don't carry it to work because I have a ton of gear on, but I keep it close by and for certain on me when going camping and fishing. I never thought of using hooks on traps (besides fishing :o) but that seems like a helluva good idea if you need to eat.

Survival - anything goes

Just because - nah, too cruel a way to die just to prove that it works.

Food for thought: When animals hunt their prey is typically fighting for it's life for quite some time before actually dying - example being a moose and wolves. They are still alive while being eaten so I think just about anything that will kill an animal quicker than that would seem quite "humane" vs the laws of nature.

don't overlook the use of a weighted 8/O treble hook to "snatch" schooling fish.... illegal today where I live, but years ago, was deadly on mullet

Screw the noose.

A great way to trap feral pigs is to set an apple with a strong hook, anchored with a wire to a long metal stake.

When they feel the hook bite, they'll sit and be waiting for you when you check your "traps".

Just make sure you take a firearm with you that will finish them off with one shot, or if your feeling game enough, a knife with a blade that is long enough to reach the vitals with one thrust. :D

Kind regards
Mick

It works. When it comes to traps, whatever works usually goes. Aslong as it doesn't torture the animal to death. I've used them. Most of the time, hook lines, barbwire, etc are used on fur animals to snag the fur for a good hold. When then start trying to get away, they just end up getting tangled worse.

I knew an old "poacher". Very old poacher. He used to use a tool, I can't remember exactly what he called them, but it was several feet of thick wire with a wood handle on one end. On the other end, there would be a loop of barbwire or some other cruely created "barbwire". He'd run these down into a den tunnel and whenever he felt like it hit something, he would start twisting the handle quickly and drag the animal out. So I can completely understand using hooks for additions to your traps. They work.

I may actually start trying them on my snares. Good thinking, man. Good thinking.

Guys I m an avid hunter and fisherman and have spent extensive time in the bush from Africa to Asia and all over the North. As a kid my family ran trap lines for money and I spent my youth working them I don't trap any more and have no problems with those who do

My concern with a thread like this is that every time I take a look in this part of he forum there is someone who parks His car walks 50 yards to a designated camp spot and practices his survival skills which is great if that's your thing

Sure in a true survival situation you use what you have to but my concern is that there are a lot of idiots on here that

Will be snaring there neighbors cat with treble hooks on a noose so they can try out these theories. Animals wheRe not put here so yahoos can test there survival skills by maiming and torchering them

So say what ya want like I said most of you have never been of the trail head and this forum has become as bad as prac tac

tell'em how you really feel Joe.

I keep a large salt water hook in my BOB for snaring/pulling animals out of holes in an EMERGENCY survival situation. Lashed on a whippy stick it works well on rabbits etc. I remember seeing my grandad do this on rabbits.--KV

I've had to release hooked cats before. My son-in-law was prone to dropping off his trotlines in my shed without removing the bait. Unhooking a cat (feline) is a total PITA. The cats suffered no permanent damage, but I still have scars. But... idiots will be idiots and someone, somewhere no doubt will attempt to make a friction fire on mum's carpet or give themselves a bird poop enema. There is no cure for stupidity.

So are we to water down a SURVIVAL forum just in case some idiots are on here ?

I'm not sure how often you participate on this forum but if you are a regular then you would know that myself and many of the other regulars often venture from the trail heads.....not that it has any relevance to the post anyway !
If you did follow my posts you would also know that I'd kick the crap outta anyone I saw harming any dogs, cats etc......I'm pretty sure most members on here would do the same !

Now I know why I don't frequent this forum. Joe is right, and the rest of you douchebags probably don't know jack about "survival".

Me, I spent a great deal of time in the Adirondack mountains as a youth without food or water, hiking on very rough trails(if you could call them that), with basic "survival" gear, knife, maps, compass, ziploc bag, canteen, and a Scout guide, and somehow, I didn't have to trap with fishooks, and I ate greens, fish and found water, without having to torture animals to death to prove that I was "survival ready".

This thread is an embarrassment to the entire knife community.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson
