caught a few fish today. This white bass swallowed the hook and was going to die. Already had a fire going , so decided to eat it.Cut its head off and gutted it. Used my Schrade needle nose vice grip to hold it to a piece of bark. Then scaled it.

Then cooked it slowly . Id never cooked a fish like this before. I was surprisd at how good it was.

Yep, I bet it was good, I love the smokey flavor of fish cooked over an open fire.

Good on you for eating the dying fish. Nice pics.
I agree that fish-on-a-stick is excellent.
Here's another (mostly) white bass progression...

Fish tacos for the win! Good thread. I love fish that go straight from the water to the heat. Way to go.

Do you ever troll in the kayak? I looked at fishing kayaks at Bass Pro last week. If I didnt already have a canoe , Id get one.

great food pics, makes the frozen tilapia i've been eating look bland. kayaks are real big in austin due to warm months & generally short winter. even my old butt is seriously considering one since they are not expensive & one person can easily fish smaller bobies of water. be careful of higher winds.---dennis

Great pics !!!
Any issue with choosing the stick, I have heard that you should avoid some types of wood to prevent after taste or even bad wood like pine.
Any insights on this issue ?

Trolling is the favored kayak technique for striper fishing most places. Combine a fish finder with live bait and slow trolling and you've got a good combo. I modified the kayak pictured above and installed the rear rod holders, so it can troll pretty well. I also added clips for rod lanyards/keepers. In a kayak, if you don't want to lose it, strap it down.

Even better is a system that puts the rods in front of you for close monitoring. Lots of guys use that Scotty deck. I built my own for a different kayak using a RAM mount.

Heck yeah. I love cooking fish like that. Tasty. Im with dipbait, I dont think Id use Cedar. :barf:

Im craving some good fishing. I rented a cabin next month for some Trout fishing with my sons....

Some of the best fish I’ve ever eaten was a little 16” catfish cooked over the fire in the skin. When it was done we hit it with a little mustard and put it back on for a minute or two. Fish you caught cooked over a fire you built is hard to beat.

I have one scotty rod holder up front and two flush mounts like Guyon. You don't know what fun is till a 30 lb bluecat grabs a bluegill on a rod in one of those flush mount rod holders :D Can you say sleigh ride . first thought when you get it up to the boat is Wow what a fish!!!!!! next thought is now what the hell do I do with it:D I fish out of an ocean kayaks drifter

i've cooked dozens of trout that way in the backcountry. the best way to do it IMO.
either that or just cook them on hot rocks. that works well to.

IMHO fish (like any other animal) tastes best when cooked bone in. Catch & release has never really caught on in my household.
