Does anybody have any experience with one of these? I've had good luck with other DR knives & wonder if this would make a decent camp knife.

I noticed a post from a long time back by Psy-Ops (not sure if he/she is around anymore?) that referenced a thread about using and abusing a fish splitter - chopping wood, dropping it on rocks, etc., but I can't find that thread anywhere in the archives or on the site.

Anybody have any fish splitter stories/pic's?

This 9" DR is my favorite large kitchen knife and doubles as my camp knife. I convexed the edge and just touch it up using the sandpaper/mouse pad trick.

Its not a cinder block killing machine but I've used it like a mini-machete to take care of some yard work.

Used it on Easter to make short work of a monster ham ;).

For the price, you won't be disappointed. They are great knives.

I've been wondering about those fish splitters for some time, too. They'd seem to have more lateral stiffness than the typical large butcher knife due to the Scandi-like grind, and the reported ~1/8" thickness. Never seen one up close, however. Commonly available via internet kitchen supply places for $35- $50.

My friends use them as "trail knives" (machetes). They have a strong edge that is capable of chopping through the hardest woods that stand in our path. They won't chip like the butcher knives and IMHO are AWESOME small lightweight machetes.

i talked to psy-ops a little while ago. he seems pretty busy with his graduate studies. LOL

i've had alot of mora butcher/fishing knives that look exactly like that pass in my hands. my favorite use for them was using them as a machete for clearing light vegetation and harvesting cat tails. they had cheap cardboard and duct-tape sheaths but none the less were some of my favorite budget choppers.
