Anyone else go out just for pickeral? it's probably 90% of what i go for but i haven't seen anyone else posting anything about'em.
Walleye to those south of the border.
added a few extra pics. going out bear baiting and minnow trapping ain't a place for fashion statements. plus a couple wildlife shots of which i have hundreds. northern ontario can be an impressive place. Bear, mountain lion, lynx, golden eagles, bald eagles, moose and so on. always like watching the osprey fishing along side me out on the lake.
even have an area of rare white moose only about 20-25 of them around there, they're not albino, just white. i'll try and find my pics of the youngin' i saw a few years ago.
here are some pics. these are all from last summer. but i haven't been a poster on here, so i'm catching up on time lost, i'll get to this years stuff next. plus a review on my Bruce Culberson and breeden bushcrafter knives as well as my snugpak rocketpak.

Most under-rated gear i have and use more than i thought. good Rain gear, specifially rain boots!!! they can be a saviour, i have a couple pair that rotate and they are a godsend. they should be discussed more as essential gear, atleast where i am out in the woods.

Welcome, sure look like you're one of us:D Great pictures thanks for sharing:thumbup: Be sure to post some threads on gear you find that works for you like those rain boots. Hard to tell the comfortable rain boots from the others. Yeah, I put my Superfeet insoles into all my foot gear, but some boots are just plain made for walking a trapline!

Walleye to those south of the border.

Awesome pics.

As for Walleye, I don't have a boat that will get me out on the Detroit River or Lake Erie for Walleye. I'll be targeting them in the inland lakes this year. I've never had much luck though.

As for the name Pickerel, that name is actually used for Pike south of the Great Lake region. Chain Pickerel being a kind of hybrid Pike/Muskie with an odd chain link like patern on their scales as opposed to dark with light spots or light with dark spots like a Muskie.

Walleye aren't my favorite to catch. Because I can't seem to catch them primarily. They don't put up as much of a fight as Smallies either. That said, they do rank in the top three for my favorite freshwater fish to eat.

Great Pics buddy. Yeah....The walleye are running like stink in the Det. River right now! The run will be done soon though. I prefer catching walleye up in N. Ontario also. They aren't particularly great fighting fish. The buggers bite so soft, you really have to pay attention. However, they are great eating. Also as they are schooling, pick one up, means you can usually pick a bunch up.

The guys are probably sick of this shot, but it is the only good walleye one I have on hand :D

Nope, never tire or seeing a woman smiling who's out fishing, ESPECIALLY with a tasty stringer of 'eyes!

Really nice! Were those top two pics pickeral?
Are pickeral good to eat?
What kind of lures are good for them?
Florida salt water fisherman, they kind of remind me of snook.

Nice pics-I really like that fox! The fishing looks like fun, too:thumbup:

I don't fish specifically for pickerel, as I'm not too fond of jigging, but depending on where I am I usually get one for every 2 or three pike I catch. They sure are good eatin'.

Good stuff, MY stepdad is putting the boat in this weekend, Ill proble be out on the Southshore of lake erie out of Colchester, we normally use a lure called an ErieeDearie its kinda like a bottom bouncer with worm harness and 4 hook sets, we troll them out about 50-75 feet and range depth with where they are hitting, or a good swimming stick bait will work but live bait works best.

Goatariba, beening up in Lodon do you ever go out of Port Stanley or Erieo(sp) . I went on a steelhead charter once , that was good, but ruff water...

Ken we'll have to take the Uof W boat out and Take some pickerel samples , ya thats what well call it samples of pickerel all offically of course....:D

hey all,
thanks for the replies. i mostly go for pickerel because i eat my fish and to me it's the best there is and a breeze to clean. bottom bouncers and a floating jig head set-up with leeches has been my go to. i'll take my limit any day of the season on that set-up in 10-20 feet of water mostly. Eaters are best around 14 inches usually in my opinion. and the trolling technique is ALWAYS the dreaded backtrolling.
i'll do another thread with some nature shots maybe tonight. and this week i'll be doing some gear reviews.
i'm surprised no one's mentioned our BEAST of a cast iron pan!!! love that thing.
i haven't gotten out around london, i'm new to the area, still figuring it out a little. but i'm up for trying everything and have been to port stanley just not to get out fishing yet.

Great pics!

I never heard of anyone refer to Walleye as Pickeral before.

This is a pickeral or Chain Pickeral where I am.

The lakes I primarily fish don't have Walleye, but I catch them occassionally in other lakes. Great eating fish!

Bingo. I noticed that almost everyone called Walleye Pickerel up in Canada but the Pickerel is in the Pike family and the Walleye is in the Perch family, I knew what he meant though.

MM MMM, my mouth is watering looking at those pics, delicious. As you probably know, the further north you go in Ontario, the more people you find that think those are the ONLY fish to eat or catch. Everything else gets thrown back. Last summer we fished a tiny lake near Smooth Rock Falls that could only be reached by ATV, my arms hurt by the end of the day! we only kept the minimum legal size ones, as they have the sweetest meat. Those along with home made poutine and a few beers, and I was in heaven.

brightb--that's completly true, i don't want to offend anyone by stereotyping so i won't get into it much but mostly canadian northerners feel that pike is a weed in their vegetable garden basically. fish is more food than sport a lot of the time and pike is concidered boney and fishy tasting compared to the pickerel i suppose. in some other canadian climates the same thing is said about lake trout and bass. let the "outsiders" go for pike and bass all day. saves more trout and pickerel for "us". atleast that's been my experience with the sentiment. pike are often refered to as boney snakes and other things of the like.

tonym--i appreciate the info. i have no problem saying that i had no freakin' clue about any of that. ever since i was a kid walleye were pickerel to me. never heard anyone call'em anything else unless they were visiting from more southernly parts of the globe. it's funny even camps that sell apparel here will put "walleye" on their shirts/hats/etc. fishing being largely an american market they want to appeal to those south of the border. but you'll never hear them call'em anything but pickerel in person. interesting stuff, always learning from this forum.

The foregoing is why I continually harp on binomials for an international forum. The Walleye (U.S.) or Pickerel (Ontario) is Stizostedion vitreum!!! Yes, of course I had to look it up.

Doc :D

goatariba,

In California, that thing would be banned as an "Assault Pan".

Great pics - they are fun fish to catch. I went fishing with a buddy of mine in NY and we caught a bunch of them, they ate them but I didn't get to try it so I'm not sure how they taste.

The ones we were catching were pretty darn aggressive. It's cool when you can actually see them stalk the lure and then finally hit it. We had a couple hit the lure just as we were getting to pull the lure out of the water about a foot or two from the boat. That was some fun fishing!

Welcome to the forums.
