Don't know about SIU, but at WIU the OPS (Office of Public Safety) would store students' firearms. You could check them out at any time, but couldn't have them in the dorm.-Bob

JeffLesniak, from my experience with SIU, I think when you get down here you will find a strong "anti-gun" bias as far as the school itself, so I doubt they would do this. I can check for you if you would like, not giving them your name however. If you do call and ask I would not give them a name because I can almost promise you that it would get a "red-flag" at SIU. SIU and unfortunately the city of Carbondale itself are somewhat "left-leaning" when it comes to guns.

EDITED:Well I did some online checking, and I somewhat stand corrected. There apparently is a system for students to apply for permission to store on campus firearms for sporting purposes. Here is a link to the residence guidebook, check page 9 section 7 paragragh c and here is the phone number for the Dept. of Public Safety. 618-453-2381.

Jewel weed is helpful with poison oak/ivy. Some compound in it blocks absorbtion of or nuetralizes the oil that causes the reaction. I get it bad, seemingly from the sight of it, and have been down the prednisone/flucosonine trail more than once. HATE prednisone, that stuff really gets to me, even if it is effective.

I was at the Presidio of Monterey for a year, and lived in housing on Ft Ord. I was told (prepare grain of salt) that during WWII they'd planted the stuff all around the base to help repel the inevitable Japanese invasion (right outta 1941, huh?). True or not, it was everywhere, and I got a couple of doses that just about had me taking a cheese grater to myself. It's bad when the sores weep all the way through your clothes. I told one of my instructors at the language school that I had leprosy (in Korean, I had to look it up), it was a toss up between her jumping and running, and puking on her shoes. She went with the former, but it was close.

To the original question, if you need/want a chopper, have you considered a Khukuri? Wander over to the Cantina, the Himilayan Imports forum, in the Maufacturers area and take a look. Fun knives, nice folks.

Confederate, thanks a lot for doin that research, it helps a lot. I find that kind of shocking about the anti-gun bias around carbondale, but that's ok. That'd be very cool if i could bring mine down--don't like to be too far from my guns and knives for too long :)

Yahmanin, the thing keeping me from a kukri is how big they are. I'm thinking the Battle Rat is even approaching the limit as far as hanging it from my backpack goes. But I appreciate the suggestion.

I don't think I mentioned that I will be hanging this from straps on my backpack (yeah, I kind of have an obsession with backpacks with too many straps hanging off them) and fittting the sheath into one of the side pockets so only the handle is out. Would the Battle Rat fit on a good sized backpack, or would the Camp Tramp be better for this? I think I've pretty much narrowed it down to one of those two, unless there would be anything better in that size/pricerange---from what I've been reading there isn't anything even close :)

And thanks again guys, can't tell you how much this is helping me out.

P.S., yeah that prednisone REALLY tastes terrible, is there any way to get that bitterness off the back of your tongue, cuz I haven't found anything that works Thanks, Jeff

Yeah, even though it sits in So. Il., Carbondale and SIU are very much influenced by the more "liberal" side of politics, especially in and around the political science dept.'s and such. To many "old-hippies" in the mix. Good folks for the most part, but a little to socialist at times. I've even had people panic at the sight of a Buck 110 and think that a "Rambo" knife like that should be illegal!

I'd hate to see how they react to a Becker CU/7....yuk yuk

If you're going to hang it on a backpack then by all means go with the BR. I wear mine on my belt which got me more into the 7" size. MtMike (Mike Bartol) also makes a neato leather sheath with D ring attachments just for this purpose. His stuff is bombproof and very 'field' oriented.

If you go over to RatChat and do a search, there is a pic. Go to the SRKW homepage and click on the chat link. Or, go to the Busse site and click on sheathmakers. Or, e/m me wetdog1911@aol.com, just put SRKW in the subject line.

The prednisone had horrendous side effects on me, mild tachycardia, hunger (even more than normal, which is saying something!), irritability, and generally made me feel terrible. I undestand this isn't terribly uncommon, though lots of folks tolerate it well, and it is pretty effective.

btw, since a khuk won't work for you (take a look at the Pen Knife though, it's a smaller piece, might fit your side pocket neatly) I vote Swamp Rat, but that's based soley on pics, reviews, and comments on handle ergos that have tended towards blissful re resperine, and irritation with the BK slabs.

How do you feel about axes? You could get into a nice axe and a companion folder, say a Catcherman for Spyderco for about what you're looking to have spent on you. Check out Ragnar's stuff, worth a peek just for the window shopping even if you're committed to a big fixed blade. Have fun in Il, and don't hold Chicago against the whole state (rassin' frassin' FOID cards..)

Well I think I have come to the conclusion that the Battle Rat is the right one for me. Thanks for all your help guys.

Yahmanin, we actually do have a lot of axes and hatchets (pretty much the whole Gerber line) and I've carried the BackPax a few times. It's just a little akward to hang off my backpack and there's ussually no room for a hatchet inside. But thanks for the suggestion, they have worked great when I use them.

Thanks again, Jeff
