I miss being 16. $55 a year to catch and release. And they say USA is free. Expect its a civil infraction that can become a criminal case for having a fishing line in water without a permit or license.

I feel like this is something not highly enforced and that because I catch and release with artificial bait and don't leave garbage and used fishing line behind I'm not much damage to the environment. I don't eat the fish so I'm not doing anything to tamper with any species population.

I really want to fish. Problem is I can only do so maybe once a month at most so I feel ripped off by uncle same for taxing me for this.

All of my fishing was with my dad when I was a kid. We used to go to bass pro shops even at night just to window shop and check out the aquarium so I amassed a nice collection of fishing gear.

My problem is I don't live that close to any bodies of water. So its hard to Justify $55 a year for something that might not be used even once a month.

Where do you live that it's $55 a year? That's high. I have family in Florida and thought a fishing license was $17 a year. Here in South Carolina we pay $10 a year and I find it's reasonable.

$55 is for a year for saltwater and fresh. FL fish and wild life commission no longer offer one year of just fresh as far as I can tell by their site. Its $36 for just one year of salt. Or $79 for a five year salt or fresh separate.

Stop releasing and start eating your catch. Perceived problem solved.

Minnesota is $23 (22+1) for residents. That includes both fresh AND saltwater, so I think I am getting a pretty good deal. :D:D

I release everything too.

I live in Florida and have a freshwater license. I am not sure where you are getting your info, but a freshwater license is $17/yr and a combo fresh/salt is $32.50/yr for a regular fl resident. I have no problem with a small fee.

*unless you are a non resident- Then it cost more, but it is still different numbers than what was stated by needler420.

Here in Delaware we have one license it is $8.50 for fresh and salt. They just started charging a couple years ago before that it was free.I also get a license in Florida and Virginia.

I understand. I have been pretty busy this year and didn't buy my TN combination hunting and fishing license until July. Cost was $56 which included $34 resident combo fishing and hunting license and $22 for trout. I don't like this price, but I support the hunting and fishing cause in my state. So, even if I only go five times, it is still less than it would have cost me for a movie or some casual purchase that I might do which I have little need for. My suggestion is that you need to think in terms of the resource and support the cause. Somebody has to pay the salaries for the game and fish warden, stocking, and whatever conservation programs the state may have. How do you feel when somebody (adult) is out fishing and does not have a license? I don't like it personally.

Took me one google search and three clicks to find this: http://m.myfwc.com/license/recreational/saltwater-fishing/

$32.50. That's $2.70/month. Not terrible to fish in a state that offers the fishing opportunities that Florida does.

I could see complaining if you lived in Kansas or someplace like that but FL?

Man, y'all are getting a deal! $47.01 for basic sport fishing license without any report cards or extra endorsements. That's CA resident price too!

I wonder how much sense a lifetime license makes (where available)? Obviously the earlier you buy it, the better.

Looking at the MN one, I am curious as to the text in bold:

http://dnr.state.mn.us/licenses/lifetime/residents/index.html

"Resident lifetime license is valid even if the licensee moves out of state

A lifetime license remains valid even if the license holder moves out of Minnesota. The licensee will still need to obtain an annual license to hunt or fish in Minnesota. However once you become a Nonresident you are only eligible for the specific lifetime license you had purchase as a resident. You are not eligible for any other resident license or resident opportunities."

Anybody have one of these? Are we talking additional fishing license expenses on top of the lifetime license?

Idk man, I have thought about the fact that it has to be purchased and that that might not make sense, but for being able to fish as much as you want... Even going out twice, that's $27 a trip. Not an insane price for a day's worth of recreation. I buy one every year.

You might not be part of the problem, but others are, and if a license fee cuts down on that problem, then we are all better off. There is no fee to fish in saltwater where I am, and it shows. anywhere people can get to the fishing is pretty bad. even with size and bag limits, lots of people don't follow them, and there is no funding for enforcement. I'd happily pay even 100$ a year to fish in some of these places if it meant that every last fish wasn't getting pulled out. but that's the way it goes.

I hope catch and release becomes the norm, the sooner the better. When I see these guys (and girls) show up with buckets and haul away panfish that the bigger fish need, it just pisses me off. I mean, can't they gorge themselves on other stuff, from Walmart and the like?

There's famies filling 55 gallon drums with sunfish of all sizes on clear lake. Just sick.

Don't fish.
Sell your tackle and come out ahead if it is all about $$$.

I consider my license fee money well spent.
It goes to enforcement, stocking programs and the resource in general.
All those little things that we take for granted.

Like the guy said, there aint no free lunch.

Oh and BTW, look up mortality rates for C&R fish. They don't all survive. And I'm a big catch and release guy.
Except for bluefish. They are too mean. Taste too good. I take their mojo :)

All catch & release fish do not survive. It depends on how they're hooked for the most part and how tired they are when you bring them in. It also depends on how the fisherman handles the fish once it is brought in.

Where do you get a one year fresh water fishing license in FL for $17?

On the FL wildlife commission site it reflects the prices I have said. Are prices different for licenses if you go to walmart or a sporting goods store?

On the website you can't even buy fresh water license only.

as an old guy in Florida, I pay nothing. Don't even need one, as just my DL is sufficient to prove residence and age. That goes for hunting license as well.
