What would you guys recommend for fishing line to add in a BOB/survival kit, i.e breaking strain, braided or mono, how may meters etc

Braid. (power pro or Spiderwire)

30# test is the same diameter as 8lb mono. You can have tripple the strength with the same amount of space taken. A few yards of Flouracarbon to use as leader line is a good idea as well.

I carry #80 test braided Spiderwire, still thin and can be used in different ways.

Spiderwire in 15#, 30#, and 80#. The assortment with the addition of some swivels, sinkers etc. make it possible to put together trot lines and traps.

If you do your fishing without a rod and want to keep it simple I would vote for the use of monofilament. You will need the elasticity of mono to absorb the power of the fish (the rod would do that normally) especially if you hook a fish nearby.

Braided lines lack in elasticity. And fishing without a rod will result in bend out hooks or a torn fish mouth.

You can use braided in combination with a 7 feet leader of mono. Choose the breaking strength of the mono leader so that it will brake before the braided does. That way you will keep your main braided line.

Another consideration is the fact that a mono line floats and a braided line sinks.
For float fishing or using a floating bait a sinking line is not very handy.
Good fishing!

sound advice, i,ve now order some spiderwire 30lb braid and i,ve already got 18lb and 8lb mono which i could use for leaders, thanks guys

I love braided line an I know many who hate it.If you are using a branch or something to tie it off to then there you have your give to both keep from tearing it out of the fishes mouth and to tire out the fish if it is a set line.I have a few different pound test with me but it is handy to use a mono leader because if you get a snag you don`t know how much braid you would lose if you had to break it ,but keep in mind I mostly use 15lb and I can staighten hooks with it if they get snagged so I just bend them back and I didn`t lose anything but time.

Well, I just had a small issue with some Spyderwire line and mono-filament line I had in a mini fishing kit. I was fishing for small small, hand-sized brim and using small hooks and small flies. Neither small spool of fishing line would feed through the hook eyes:eek: Luckly, my short Emmrod pole/reel had some small, 8 pound test line and I made some leaders off of it.

Make sure your hooks match or you have some smaller mono-filament if you're planning on smaller fish. It was good lesson for me today...

I still like the Spectra-type fishing line as it's extremely strong for its size and can be used for sewing and snares as well as fishing line.

I just bought a new spool of Spiderwire braided line, 50lb test, but somewhere around the diameter of monofiliment 12lb test. I just need to score some boobins to spool it on.

I see you've already made your choice but FWIW I too choose braided, mostly because I view it as backup cordage first and fishing line second.

Hey ROCK6 whats the plastic tube set up you have there in the last pic please mate

They are often referred to as "Tube Vaults" and you should be able to find them around, even the UK Ebay site...

Tube Vault

They work quite well for a compact fishing kit and hand-casting reel.

I carry a couple different weights of Fireline. Tube vaults are awesome as well. I get mine from countycomm.com. Bobbins are great for spooling, but I haven't found any that will fit in the tube vaults yet.

I made dozens and dozens of fishing kits out of those tube vaults.

With a little searching, however, you can find them FAR cheaper than other sites.

They are used in education circles as test tubes.

I use a standard monofiliment on my tubes (because I don't have to worry as much about the line cutting my hands if I reel anything in that is of decent size - smaller spyder line will cut you like a razor if you are not careful) and I keep a bobbin or two of heavy strength spyderline in my kit to use as drop lines.

Spyderwire cast well. There is no memory. I hate it though because I hold the string between my thumb and finger, been doing so for decades and wont change. When I set the hook with braid ,there is no give and I cut my index finger every time.

Those tube vaults are great things! They're actually the "before" of 2L soda bottles. (They get heated up and blown into molds.)

I'll second for heavy braid or mono for handlines. I've torn my fingers and hands up handlining with spyderwire and such. Just no give.
