Fisk Micro Show 2011 - A Preview

Thanks folks. The guys are really bringing some good works this year. Thats the one thing we try to do, is combine having fun with knife education as the ones that are here really learn alot about collecting. We never say who to collect but help teach what to look for and how to collect. This is really a fun event for those attending and as was said, we do eat well. :)
After them turning the gator loose in the yard accidently last year I am wondering whats going to happen this year. By the way, they taste like chicken.
I am really tickled that Mike, JR and Tommy are bringing such nice pieces to the show.

Kevin have fun and enjoy your time at the show, more pics will be appreciated by those of us that wish they were there :)

I wish I was there too.
Had made plans to attend but just couldn't get away.
Went back to work a few months ago and am putting a lot of hours in (including weekends) so my knife show schedule is going to suffer.

They will be drawing for the Cancer Benefit Bowie this afternoon, so I will be announcing the winner shortly afterwards.
Keep your fingers crossed, as its a beauty.

Micro Show Report
Attendance was very good. Sales were excellent, every knife on the property sold but one, record price for a single piece as well. The drawing of the marbles for the pieces went smoothly and quickly with some of the pieces changing hands over sales again before the weekend was over.
On Friday we toured the Aero Scissors plant and the guys were really surprised at its plant. One of two places in America that still drop forges their scissors. All of it old style hand work which was amazing to watch. They paid their people over time since they do not work on fridays, to be there working for our tour. Everyone got a pair of sportsman scissors too. That drop forge working was cool as all get out. We also did a short tour of the James Black shop in Washington Arkansas were the Bowie knife was made. We exploded alien heads in the back pasture with exploding targets. That was a blast in more than one way.

I gotta say we do put out a good table. Darby and Holly know how to cook and have it ready at the given time, very professional and an excellent layout and some of it would make you slap your grandma for being in the kitchen.

We had our first Knife Rodeo. Ryan Hayes won the Top cut prize by one point. Buddy Tomason was nipping at his heels the whole way through. We had 8 events I think it was. We walked each collector through how and why on cutting. Then let them cut. It gave the folks a different view now on when looking at handle and blade designs and they know more questions to ask.

There was a question and answer type session that was one and a half hours long and when we had to stop they were still asking questions of each other from both maker and collector view points. It was straight and honest view points. It was educational from both sides of the fence.

This show is set up to be relaxed and just have fun while learning. We accomplished that and I enjoyed it.
Thank you to JR Cook, Tommy Gann and Mike Wiliams. Each of them stepped up their normal pieces and brought some exciting work.

Kevin, I know that you couldn't make this Microshow, but you missed a good one.

As Jerry said, the knives from all of the makers were top notch and the sales showed that. The tour of the Aero scissors plant surpised me and many of the others. It's really nice to see a top quality product competitively priced and made in America. Shooting aliens, exploding pumpkins, throwing hawks, knives and spears was fun for all. The cutting contest was a hoot.

The food as always was as good as it gets. Thanks to Holly and Darby.

The best thing about the Show is the people. It is a relaxed atmosphere were you can learn alot and get to know makers better than any other event that I have attended. I have been to all seven of Jerry's shows and am looking forward to the next show and many more.

Here are a few photos.

It was as good as it gets in knife collecting.

Thanks Jerry and all the others who made this possible.

It sure does look like a good weekend had by all.
Another "Congrats" to Brent Holtam on the winning ticket.

This is an Alien head exploding with a well placed shot. We had a hoot doing different things and there are always things setup to do at the same time.
Humm, this set up is different on how to set up a photo. I did something wrong and cannot figure out what I did. Take my word for it, it was a big bang and lots of sawdust.

I had one of the best times of my life! Thanks to all that were there. Darby and Holly sure know how to cook. Jerry and Bob are the best when it comes to throwing a show!

Great report. Just a super format, I can smell the awesome food. Hated to miss this one, it sounds like entertainment galore!

Thanks to Jerry and company for a weekend that far exceeded my expectations.
In addition to what others have mentioned I would say it was one of the most educational experiences I've had. The way I look at custom knives, evaluate them and decide to purchase or not will be different in the future. I will be able to make smarter purchases with better results and more long-term satisfaction. My interactions with makers will be informed by insights gained from the frank and open discussions we had.

We were able to take much of what we'd learned and translate it into action during the knife rodeo and cutting competition. Participating in the cutting activities helped me to really comprehend the truth of what we'd been learning and it greatly increased my confidence too. I'd never taken part in an event like that, and to be honest, I was nervous about it. But Jerry, JR, Mike and Tommy made it easy for everyone and before long we were all having the time of our lives. Each challenge was designed to reinforce certain lessons about knife design and function.

Some may laugh at me for the picture below, or think I'm bragging - whatever... The truth is I didn't think I could be successful at something like that and I had no idea what I was doing in the beginning. But Jerry, JR, Mike and Tommy helped me and the other participants to know what to do, to practice it and then to make it count. That was important for me and it says a lot about them. Congratulation to Ryan Hayes who took first place. His enthusiasm and great spirit was appreciated by everyone. Second place means nothing out there in the world and we all know that. But it meant a lot to me, in a personal sort of way, and that's why I made this picture:

Great reports by host and attendees. I think it's terrific that the makers do so much to educate the collectors - that's a smart move on many levels.

Buddy it was great seeing you again.

Super job in the cutting competition. You would have won if you had picked 1 less bottle to cut. Think next year!
