Fiskars 23.5 inch Chopping vs. Splitting Axe Question

I've not been able to find anything other than Fiskars 14 inch hatchet locally. I'd like to get their 23.5 inch axe, and would like to get it from Amazon because of their free shipping option. The problem is that Fiskars offers this particular axe in both a "chopping" model and a "splitting" model. And since I'll be using it more for chopping, the chopping model is the one I'd most like to get. Unfortunately, the chopping model is $39.74, while the splitting model is only about half that at $21.39.

Does anyone know the real difference between these to models? I'd assume the grind may be different. If so, can I turn a splitter into a chopper with a little grinding?

The heads are pretty different on a splitting axe(maul) and a normal chopping axe. The maul will have a much more obtuse angle to drive wood apart, whereas the chopper would have a more acute angle to penetrate more deeply into wood.

I have no idea if you could grind a maul into a chopper, but it seems like it would be a lot of work.

The Fiskars splitting head isn't quite as wide as a maul but it would definitely more than "a little grinding" to turn it into a chopper. In the picture on amazon you can kind of make out the flared cheeks on the splitting model. I tried a quick search to see if I could find any pics that show it from the top but didn't have any luck. Suffice it to say that the head is much thicker and you'd have to remove a LOT of material to get it down to a good chopping thickness and profile. You may be able to do it with a belt sander but I personally wouldn't want to mess with it.

Thanks to both of you. I do indeed have a full size knife grinder, but even so, I probably don't want to bother. I'll keep looking for a better price somewhere else. I think the 23.5 inch chopping axe would be perfect for my limited needs-- if I can get it for a good price.

They also make a 28" Pro Chopping model fiskars that is for $28 or so. The longer handle is easier on the 2 handed grip IME.

I actually picked up my 23.5 Fiskars chopping axe today. I got it from Sears. I ordered it at their website for $29.99 and picked it up at my local store today. That's $10 less than Amazon. I've noticed Sears is cheaper on other things compared to internet prices.

So-- I brought the axe home and took it to some dead locust. I don't have anything to compare it too, but it sure made big deep cuts. No problems using it two handed. In fact, it was very comfortable and easy to use.

I just bought the 14 inch hatchet a few weeks ago. I sorta wish I hadn't, as I doubt I'll use it much. I can see using the axe for most everything I'll need to chop.
