Has anyone used the Fiskers Splitting Axe. I am curious to know how efficient they are at splitting rounds at home or camp.

Thanks for your input.

Cheers, Shane :D

I find it to be a great compromise between a large hatchet and a maul when kayak-camping, where the weight of my gear is less of an issue than while hiking/backpacking. While a splitting maul is a better choice when I'm chunking rounds at home, the Fiskars splitting axe does a fantastic job at a fraction of the weight, and I usually take mine when I take an axe on a camping trip.

I think that you'll be pleased if you get one; I was.

I have. There are a couple versions of the Splitting Axe. One has a slightly heavier head and thicker grind that acts like a wedge. The lighter version, the one I own, is better suited in my opinion for general wood work. Can it split too, yes, but the wedging action of the other combined with the heavier head will make it split easier. Of course, your best bet is a big ole' maul designed for the task.

Home, camp it'll work fine, cant really think of when it would'nt work actually I split 5 cord with mine last year so im happy.

Would the splitting axe be a good compromise as a felling/splitting tool, or does the wedge seriously get in the way of chopping.

I would guess that you're referring to the Fiskars-produced Gerber splitting axe? If so I have one and it does a great job. Though the prominent concave wedge occasionally makes things difficult (pounding your way through a stubborn/damp piece of wood) but most of the time it performs flawlessly. For felling it ought to do ok though obviously not ideal. It comes with a fine enough edge on it that I had to broaden the bevel so it wouldn't ding when it hit knots.
