I want to make a lock back folder and have read the book how to make folding knives but still am a little confused on designing the locking lug and the notch. One illustration says there are two contact points that lock the blade in a solid- no wobble position. If you are looking at the side of the knife, point to your left, edge down, the two locking points are supposed to be the upper left (front) corner of the notch and then the bottom right (lower) corner of the notch. Does this mean on the lug that the front of it (left) has to be slightly angled so the top hits the notch first? and along the same lines does the back of the notch have to be slightly angled to the right so the lug contacts at one point?

Now, maybe there are several ways to do this. Any help or suggestions welcomed- thanks. :o

I keep the front of the notch close to 90 and put a slight angle on the back. You want alot of contact at the front to secure the blade. You need a slight angle somewhere so your spring will force the lock into the notch. Make sure there is a slight gap at the bottom of the lock so with wear the fit will remain tight.

I read that book years ago , and have since made a many a lock back . Wayne Clay has the best beginning design if I remember correctly . That being said do yourself a favor. Go buy a lock back that strikes your fancy and use it for a pattern . This will save you a lot of tears in the long run . Good luck and always remember with folders THINK FLAT .
