i recently bought some redwood burl blocks from Burl Source, and want to finish out a hidden tang bowie with one, i havent ever done a HT knife.

I dont want to split the block, but how do i get the hole big enough for the tang to fit in? its rather wide at the top, and i want to keep it that way.

You can lay the tang on the side of the block in the position it will be when the knife is put together. Then trace around it. Trace or draw the shoulders of the tang on the end of the block where they will be. Then use the traced lines to drill holes to shape the mortise (hole in the block). Once you have drilled holes you can use files, chisles, etc. To remove wood from the mortise and shape so the tang will fit. There is a tool called a broach that you can get to help scrape the wood out of the mortise. These can be expensive so feel free to make a little tool from an old screwdriver (sharpen it) or use your imagination. Good luck!

Edit: Ya beat me to it with better info!!
