Five knives for the rest of your life

I know top 5 threads are done quite often here, but I enjoyed the exercise. I'm surprised there aren't more responses.

It's cool to see what other bladeforum members would consider as their top 5 user forever users. Good way of seeing what's out there, and what is getting pocket time.

I know both of my top 5's (own/do not own)that I posted have already slightly changed, but that wasn't a deterrent in joining in on the fun.

Shirogorov Hati
CF inlay Insingo Sebenza 21
CF scale Insingo Sebenza 21
Hinderer XM18 3.5 (reground to actually cut)
Benchmade 940-1

I can do this in 4...

1) Leatherman Micra for a pocket tool.
2) Leatherman Blast for full sized tool.
3) Opinel #9 Inox
4) Buck 110 aluminum frame (available from Copper and Clad)

The Micra is a constant companion. I keep a larger multitool in my daypack/man purse. Usually I carry a Juice but if I had to stick with just one, I would take the larger Blast.

The Opinel #9 and Buck 110 both get carried in my right rear pocket. I sew a seam up the side of my rear pockets and the knife carries comfortably there. More importantly, it's much stealthier than advertising the knife with a clip or a holster. I generally ignore knives laws. I don't recommend that. But that's how I approach it. If I think there is any chance of an issue, I carry the cheaper Opinel which won't ever get confused with a weapon.

The Buck 110 Aluminum Frame is, IMO, the Buck 110 fully realized. It's light enough to make it easy to carry all day and it retains great balance. It's my hunting knife and my EDC most days now.

Since I have a slot open, I'll pick the Schrade-Walden H-15 for a fixed blade. It will do pretty much everything from food prep to woods bumming with ease. The thin stock and convexed saber grind is the secret. It's a grind that should be rediscovered, IMO.

EDITED TO ADD: I'm flat out ignoring the no multitool and no fixed blade clarifications. So shoot me. I can easily live the rest of my life with just 2 pure folding knives.

It depends the standards...

First, my list could possibly change month to month (especially on folders)

Case Sod buster Junior
Benchmade Griptilian 550 in 440c

I have about 12 that I rotate through for weekday and weekend carry. I could pick a variety of them and be well fixed:
PM2 in M4 or S110V
Manix 2 LW in S110V
Manix 2 in M4 or cruwear
Manix 2 XL
Military in M4

Watching that video made me think of the money invested in all those knives. Don’t get me wrong, I have more knives than that and plenty of, to most people, expensive knives. Some of those knives, while perfectly sharp and durable, are practically jewelry. Some knives remind me of seeing a glass case full of Sigs, while they have a value as a tool, you almost wonder how much of the draw is aesthetic.

I was at a meeting today and on a break a woman leaned over and showed me watches she was looking at at Nordstrom’s website and told me how a $ 1400 watch was a great deal and O should buy one for my wife for Christmas. I joked about the cost but looking at that video how many collectors spend $ 1400 every year, every six months on knives.

Yet when I give knives to friends and relatives I see them pulled out years later, often it’s the only folding knife they have and they use it for nearly everything short of maybe hunting and processing meat

Anyway I’m not sure I can choose 5. Would the Bradys choose 5 children and leave Bobby behind?

this is a tuff one but can be done in my mind. I believe I will mix it up.
1. folder- xm18 3.5 no choil. with a spanto regrind from rek. those rek regrinds send shivers down my back.
2. multitool- leatherman wave or surge. it would be belt carried in a double mag holster with flashlight.
3. fixed- esee 6 with larger micarta handles contoured to fit like a glove.
4. traditional- trapper with a nice stag handle. wharncliff and clip point blade.
5. Benchmade nimravus or something like it. 4 inch blade on the thinner side for a utility blade nothing heavy duty

1. Emerson CQC 15 satin serrated
2. Emerson Super Commander satin serrated
3. Wilson Combat Eagle
4. Spyderco Ulize
5. Chris Reeve Sebenza 25 with micarta inlays
