Five minute Buddhism overview

...
From Red Pine aka Bill Porter ...

Red Pine is a very good translator of not only philosophy but also Chinese poetry. He also writes engagingly. One good book is on wandering the lonely places of modern China in search of the remaining hermits.

Never really integrated into academia. I got a big kick from the dedication of one of his books -- Dedicated to the Food Stamp Program.

Last I heard he was living a couple of miles from me, as the crow flies over the water. Perhaps our paths will cross one day.

Thanks for posting this, Kis.

Uncle Bill inspired me to look into Buddhism over the years. I have found it to be a very useful tool in the roughest of times. I wouldn't consider myself an "-ist" of the subject. Nor would I even really consider myself a hardcore student. I would like to correct that.

As the years grind on and things pile up, enlightened education may fill in some of my glaring gaps.

Kis,

Good post. Is this original, or from another site?

Tantric Buddhist sects simply accept the body instead of trying to conquer it. The body, as part of one's self, (yeah, that's a whole 'nuther discussion~) can be used as a tool for enlightenment. It's rather like contrasting some teachings in the Bible about conquering "the flesh", as opposed to believing God made man in his image, and so that image must be good. ;) (Not trying to open a debate about Christianity, just making a comparison.)

Hey John,

This is from a scholar's site, certainly not original to me. http://www.buddhanet.net/e-learning/5minbud.htm

Points in the teaching, or explanation, resonate for me, and most certainly were exemplified by Bill Martino's way of life by the time I knew him.

As you know, one doesn't have to embrace the philosophy to accept the insights.

Be well and safe.

:)

:)

I certainly agree with that Kis. And, your post, as always, was helpful, and very much worth reading.

It is good to see the cantina of old re emerging over recent weeks and months, or perhaps, it is good to see the cantina growing, and seeing new manifestations of things we used to see and enjoy.

Jesus would NOT be surprised to see that he has followers and worshippers. That is part of what he intended to accomplish while on earth.

I will leave the rest for another time and place.

:)

Take care,

Tom
