I have an extremely hard question for you guys to deal with.
I'm looking for a PC friendly fixed blade, 3-4", no outragously looking designs and preferably anything but black. It also has to be about $20US or about $35CDN.
I know the Camillus ArcLite and some others, but I don't know a place in Canada that would carry an ArtLite...
Please help me solve the dilemma.

The CRKT F4 is a nice little fixed blade...a tad under your size range at 2 5/8".

Also the Schrade Sharpfinger is an excellent small fixed blade. Both go for about 20 dollars US and are very utilitarian looking.

Hey Calyth,
If your looking for a belt type, I'd second the Sharpfinger. Check out Wal-Mart. Started all my boys on their f/b's at wally world.
Sharpfinger, Western Drop point hunter, Scharde Gamemaster safe-t-grip.Actually if I hadn't stumbled upon BFC, they'd be happy with these forever and wouldn't be asking about things like Carsons, or Mayos, or Hossom.
These knives have been used on game and as camp knives they don't have rust ( except the sharpfinger) and the boys put them through hell.
Actually compared to what i see 90% of the hunters I check both res and non res carrying each fall Scharade or Buck might as well be custom made because most are carrying POS knives that even before I came to BFC I could tell were bought at a flea market.
Best one - guy who figured best hunting/skinning knife for bear hunting ever was a 20" machete figures since he was shooting his .458 Win mag. Ouch!

Richard: It's a tad too small... I do have it.
I want a kind of regular sized fixed blade because I would wear it and prove to people that I'm a responsible person with one.

What you describe fits most hunting knives. You have many choices in this size range in production knives, even for $20 U.S.

Smokey Mountain Knife Works will have lots of options for you. What you are NOT likely to find at those prices are decent knives and decent sheaths at the same time... You'll have to put up with a simple sheath for a while, but that might help the look anyway...

If you let your range drop to 2" or 2.5", there are more that come along that are nice as knives, and have fairly decent sheaths. A few have already been mentioned. I think one of the A.G. Russel bird and trout knives is at this price point, so you see you get a lot more quality for your $$ if you go with an even smaller (than 3") blade.

The Mora knives perform very well, are cheap, and have non tactical looking handles made of either wood or plastic (red, blue, or green colored depending on the model). Sheaths are not very good though.

get a CRKT companion, a great knife, sheaths kinda crummy, but serviceable , and the price is w/in your range too.

PS - didnt notice the 35 Canadien Dollars, i guess its too high, but not by much, about $30 or so USD.

Calyth, for a friendly looking fixed blade check out the J. Marttiini M571:

This budget puukko style knife made in Finland is available from Kellam knives for $14.95 US. It's sturdy, sharp as a lightsabre and won't raise any fuss since it just looks like a plain utility knife. The blade is 3.5 inches in length and is made of forged carbon steel. The sheath is plastic and similar in design to the Swedish Mora knife sheath, but it's quality is a bit better so it holds the knife securely.

I second the Mora or Marttiini, knives. Outstanding performance for any price, but they happen to be cheap.

SIFU: I do have a companion but it still scares people....
Thanks for all the help so far. I'll consider them.

Calyth:

Here's a suggestion about the Moras. I think that the knife is awesome, but it still may scare the sheeple, because they usually have bright handles and the sheaths are a tad bulky, etc. people would definitely know you are carrying a knife! But what you could do is go to a leather worker and buy a piece of scrap leather big enough to make a sheath yourself. To make a simple leather sheath you only need water, leather, thread, a needle, and a nail to make thread holes. You can get a little fancier very inexpensively too. Make a nice leather sheath for a Mora and you may get people looking a little more inquisitively at you and your knife. Instead of "Wht the hell do you carry a knife?", people may ask "Hmm.. that is that knife?" Then you can tell them that you made a sheath for your nice Mora, and edge-u-cate the sheeple. It would also demonstrate that you do care about your fixed blades, and take them seriously. people who don't care wouldn't take the time to make a leather sheath for their knife.

Good luck!

Calyth, how do you plan to carry your fixed blade? As far as inexpensive fixed blades go, Sweden's Frosts Mora and Finland's Marttiini blades are my favourites. I've carried them around my neck on a breakaway chain tucked inside a loose fitting shirt and they're barely noticable and I've also carried them tucked in my front pocket, with a peice of paracord through the belt loops then attached to my belt. For the price, you can't beat these Scandinavian blades.

Crayola: Thanks for the idea, but I'm still interested at your offer ;)
el cid: I'll be wearing one in the open because the law says so, and I'm trying to find a way that people wouldn't freak out at me for carrying one.
Leather sheath would probably be needed someday ;) I figure they're more aesthetically pleasing and generally won't freak people out.

I agree with Crayola. I nicely crafted leather sheath instead of kydex or black plastic would deflect the "Oh my God, he's carrying a weapon" remarks. If not, you can always carry a Maglite or a tape measure clipped to your belt along with your fixed blade. People won't even give you a second glance.

I have a smaller maglite...
I didn't know Lee Valley has the Frost Mora.
I got my eyes on the 3 3/4" and it's only like 16 bucks CDN. Then I'll have some money left over and hopefully find a place to buy a piece of leather.
Thanks lots for all the help!
The reason why I want a PC fixed blade because I had this incident with a stupid bus driver.
My friend just came back from a SE Asia trip and he was suckered in to getting a souvenier knife. He gave it to me and I rode the bus home. I was carrying on the hand among my books, and of course, as soon as he saw it, he freaked out. He said that it was over 6" and it's illegal and I had it concealed (I put it between the books).
a) there's no such law concerning the length of a blade, if there were, then I don't see how people are allowed to purchase their kitchen knifes at the first place because they would be in possession of a blade over 6" in public places
b) the souvenier "knife" is nothing more than a hunk of unbeveled, unsharpened steel. I showed him that it wouldn't even cut my arm (nor my throat) and it's practically harmless.
He then got all nutty and insisting that it's illegal, when I told him that when I bought my first knife, I've confirmed with a cop about blade lenght and crap, and I'm also a Criminology student, and well aware of public opinion like his. He still insist that I have an illegal item (I don't see how it was legally a knife, my friend got it pass the customs and stuff) and rambled on about how he got a knife that was confiscated because it was double edge.
Double edged knives are not federally illegal, I told him, then he said that you hold it like a fist and then I realise what he had. I told him he had a push dagger and that's definately illegal regardless of length.
So when it was my stop, I told him, if you're so worried about the 6" knife "law", don't touch your kitchen knifes, and I'm not going to kill him with an unsharpened piece of steel.
Then I made up my mind of carrying a friendly FB in public.

If you go to Ragweed Forge there are some very pretty Finnish and Norwegian fixed blades that come with lovely leather sheathes (especially the Finnish ones).
Ragweed is on vacation, but will be back on Monday.

www.ragweedforge.com

You want to check out the Helle Basics and Brusletto Balder (under Norwegian knives) and some of the utility puukkos under Finnish knives. For another $10 or so you can get a small Horsehead Puukko that no one will look askance at.
(Remember shipping will be $5 or so, as with any of these places.)
Ragweed also has a nice selection of Mora knives with the regular plastic sheathes.
