Looking for a fixed blade and lock blade knife that is rugged, easy to sharpen and stays sharp. Also trying to keep the price for each knife, individual, under 100 dollars. Any suggestions? Also must be an everyday carry. Thanks.

General use. Also a self defense knife. From two and a half inch blade and up in lock to six to eight inches in fixed. Something easy to carry. Nothing Rambo but nothing Pee Wee Herman. Also a nice knife to take camping and maybe use for hunting.

Stay with Ontario, the Rat Series in fixed or lock back. Or try Buck.

I usually go for higher priced blades, but these two really surprised me with their quality! I bought a Schrade fixed blade with 1095 steel for a backup knife to put in my truck. That thing has a very surprisingly good heat treat, great toughness, edge holding, edge stability, and easy to sharpen. The lockback I bought was Byrd, which is a company that spyderco owns. Their 8Cr13MoV works great for an EDC!!! I got both of those for under $60 combined. They are definitely worth trying out! Amazing quality for the price.

If you are looking for higher priced. Ontario RAT fixed blades are great. Also I you could save up and go a bit over your price point for a fixed blade, swamp rat knives are very tough. But if you go past 150 I would go custom.

The only lockback I own is the one I mentioned by Byrd, so I can't give many recommendations in that area. I know Cold Steel has their Recon series along with some others right at $99 and below. Lionsteel has some in that pricing, as does Syderco. Fallkniven as well.

I could recommend other knives, but they are not lockback.

How about Gerber? I have a browning fixed curl that at this point is my favorite but I'm always looking for something better. The browning is razor sharp and very useful. I really want a collection of very useful everyday knifes for work, camping and God forbide self defense.

I have heard really good things from people about their cold steel folders.

I never had a good experience with Gerber knives.

Buck makes very good knives. Their 420HC is great for folders and fixed blades. I have seen some nice 420HC steel cord wrapped fixed blades that would be useful EDC blades.

Cold Steel knives are very good for the price. Their Recon Scout fixed blade may be just what your looking for. Buck 110 is an iconic folding knife at a fair price.

My best advice is to check out the Exchange. You will get more for the money. Also another recommendation for the 1095 Carbon Steel Schrade fixed blades. I've seen nothing but favorable reviews and they even look sexy IMO. For a folder I'd go with a Spyderco PM2 or Manix 2, or even a Delica or Endura depending on your steel preference. I can't find any faults in their VG-10. After my Endura shows up then my most common steel for anything over $20 will be VG-10.

schrade is a hard one, they were great, then were terrible, and are back on the upswing, so its very much a knife specific thing.

I'd go for an Izula 2 or a becker BK-24 for the fixed, and a Spyderco Delica or Native5 LW for the folder. The reason being, you should be able to pick both those up used, in good shape, then sell again pretty easily. They will teach you a lot about what you want in a knife. There is a lot of chaff in the 60$ range, and for guys that like that sort of stuff, there is no harm in that at all, but getting something like this will show you what a knife can be.

Bucks are good, Cold Steel are not bad, but I think suffer from a lot of marketing. Get self defense out of your mind as a knife use. As a purpose, it ruins knives for pretty much everything else.

My opinions are also my own, and are worth what you have paid.

I run ESEE for my fixed blades. My favorite folders are Spyderco. Delica 4 or PM2. Can't go wrong with these I promise.

As far as fixed blade and lock blade for under a hundred is concerned, I'd have to agree w/ most here...Buck, Cold Steel or Ontario are the way to go. KA-BAR is also good too (Beckers are great but I have a USN Mark I...great knife) I own or have owned a Buck 119 Special, a Buck 110, Cold Steel Recon Tanto, Ontario SP2 USAF Survival, 499 USAF Pilot Survival.

Of all the above listed I can personally recommend the Buck 119, (awesome fixed blade) the Buck 110 (great lockblade) and Cold Steel Recon Tanto (one of the best fixed blades I've ever owned).

Never personally owned any of the CS lockblades but I do hear good things about them (particularly the Recon 1)

Esee Izula or 3. Even maybe a 4 if you prefer the bigger size & you can find them for under 100.

Cold Steel Recon 1

Avoid Gerber, they've really gone down hill. For folders check out Spyderco, Kershaw, Buck, Cold Steel, for more traditional look at GEC, Case, Queen.
For Fixed blades in your price range look at Condor, Buck, Svord, Esee, Ka-bar, or pop over to the exchange and see what's available. Right now there are a few customs available that are right around $100.

I did a quick online search and for $200 or less you can pick up an ESEE 4 or 6 and a Spyderco Delica or Endura. I have owned/used each model and would feel comfortable carrying as a combo. I also agree with the suggestion of checking the for sale section for new and used customs. There are many talented makers here who offer great knives at fair prices.
