Fixed blade choice for kids

What about a KABAR Becker Campanion 5.25.

Under $70 with a 5 1/4" blade, 1095 steel.
Yes, noticed that, very attractive knife. They would love that I'm sure. It would look a bit brutal in the hands of an 8-year old perhaps? Still, a serious option.

Maybe, but it will hold up and last them. :)

And it's cheap so you won't have to worry about it. :D

8 year old! Plastic scissors maybe best?

Poppycock! I've seen 6 year olds be more knowledgeable and have a better sense of purpose and display more responsibility than most adults, even some so called experts.

Okay, my rant is done.

and others from Bark River. But, I think I'd start them off with Moras.

Buck fixed blades are great for kids. Not too pricy and well-built.

Bark Rivers are great too. Many sizes to choose from.

You cannot go wrong with either the Buck 119, or the Benchmade Rant DPT. I have had excellent usage out of the Rant, and the Buck 119 was the fixed blade of the Boy Scouts when I was in. I can also recommend the Ontario SP Navy Mark I - 4 inch 1095 steel. There is also the ubiquitous Ontario Pilots Survival knife. Mora 2000.

I carried a boy scout slippie in my pocket when I was seven. My parents figured once I went through the safty of cub scout whittling that I would be responsible with it. I carried a sak in my school bag through college.

Go to Ragweed Forge and look at the Moras. Then look through some of the other Scandi stuff. That's what I'll be giving my Grandsons.

Most people don't think about it but a big plus here is the sheaths for some of the cheaper models. They hold the knives deeply and securely and because they are plastic they won't mildew or rot.

Ah! forgot about the Benchmade Rant DPT. A GREAT knife for about $47. Also might look at the short KABAR figting/utility knives.
