Fixed blade EDC

These days all I carry is a small fixed blade

it is the way :)

once you carry a small fixed you will never prefer carrying a folder if your really carrying it for defensive purposes the speed you cab deploy can not be beat and im getting old and slow

timer on iPhone is for some type of reference nothing more

When worn horizontally crossdraw you can access it strong side saber grip or Filipino grip or weak side ice pick grip.

I carry a gun strong side so naturally I want fast weak side access.

a setup does not have to break the bank and if you can stretch your budget a bit the Bradford Guardian 3 is a touch little package. Comes with a solid sheath. Ditch the clip and get a 2 inch wide 10 inch long Velcro strip that facilitates a very sturdy horizontal carry method.

the Spyderco Ronin II scaled down would be great its just kinda two big to wear in the right place. The original Ronin is great if you can find one but they have gotten pricey

Small is just really practical and carries the best and for this type of a knife you want fast and sharp you will never get the lead pipe effect out of a small carry-able blade.

my tastes for blade styles runs between 3 to 3.5 inch bladed Wharncliffes and Japanese style blades.

Wharnies are ideal edc’s they just do chores well and on a defensive blade I can’t think a more effective tool in a small package

just what I’ve evolved to in carry and works for me hope its helpful

i will alternate but this cable piece from David Mirabile gets the lion share of my carry its just a really handy tool blends into my belt line and i wear it with sport coats etc in professional situations

...Speaking of defensive tools, "full grip on the draw" isn't just a convenience. It's widely considered a benefit for defensive tools and some trainers consider it a hard requirement. Given that these are named "Guardian", you'd think that they'd be streamlined for defensive applications. I know Bradford makes a kydex alternative but it looks like that too inhibits full grip on the draw. Armatus makes a Kydex sheath that seems to fix that problem but I haven't tried it.

From my own uses, I'd HIGHLY recommend an Armatus sheath.

Pick your poison as far as your knife, but I can pretty assuredly say that you won't be disappointed with one of Matt Braly's offerings... (*two Barky "Squad Leaders", two TOPS "Tex Creeks", a TOPS "Baja 3.0", and a Becker "BK-16")

*I'm a fat guy who had bi-lateral inguinal hernia surgery in my late-20's. I'm not a fan of heavy stuff on my belt, and these sheaths flat-out disappear on your waist. Beyond that, if you have something for which Armatus doesn't offer a sheath (*or have custom scales that would require fitment to the sheath), it's as easy as mailing your knife to him. Trust me, it'll be worth your wait.

Thanks for sharing this. I had a similar surgery after a car accident and it still gives me some trouble.

Your post was the final straw. I'm going to revisit the Guardian 3.5 and try it out with an Armatus sheath.

I'm also a fan of RK Custom Kydex for this kind of stuff but I never thought to ask him. It's good to have options and I'm looking forward to trying out the Armatus.

The guardian 3.5 is a great knife i just wish that they had it in a slimmer grind. Fantastic size, handle shape, ergonomics, but it is a THICK knife at the spine

I decided to keep the izula and put some grips on it and get a nice sheath for it. I plan to purchase a bk14 after as well but for right now I’m looking for a sheath and leaning towards tkc scales.

I'm glad my post could help.

I wanted to add...

Obviously, the Armatus sheaths are not snake oil, and larger knives are not going to "disappear on your waist" as easily as smaller knives. That being posted, I carry those Tex Creeks All. The. Time. and reckon you're going to be quite happy with that G3.5/Armatus combo. (*Once you've had time to play with that combo, I'd be curious to know how it worked-out for you)

Some great suggestions here! Been thinking of a fixed blade for colder weather carry myself. Around 3.5 or slightly larger. Also these sheaths have come a long way in terms of quicker deployment. Like the new adj. tension clips for knife security.

I'm not looking to break the laws of physics. I'll just be happy if this works the way I think it will. I've also decided to go with the tanto this time. As I was looking over the options, I realized that I don't currently own a tanto-style fixed blade. The blades on these are already thicker than I usually like for EDC so I figured what the heck.

I'll be glad to check back in once I get everything and have a chance to mess around with it.

As far as "disappearing on the waist", there are some tiny fixed blades that are easier to forget about. Le Duck from Outdoor Edge is a surprisingly good little knife. Sure, it's only 8Cr13Mov but it's also like $25. The sheath can be rotated to different orientations and it has a little retention tab. A smaller option is the Tonife Squirrel. It's very small but ergonomic and clicks into a kydex-style sheath. It makes for a good "box cutter" but being 7Cr17Mov puts it on the same list for me as Le Duck.
