Fixed blade for backpacking/ camping? <$300

Another vote for using the For Sale section in the Knife makers forum here. I own 3 fixed blades from makers here. The first two were bought straight from the For Sale section, the 3rd I emailed the maker and asked him to tweak his design (a longer and fatter handle). If you buy it straight from the thread, you will have it in 4-7 days (unless overseas). If you want a custom, obviously that would take longer. Don't hesitate to post in someone's For Sale thread and ask them to contact you if you want something tweaked or changed. Most makers work with different steels and can order any handle material you desire. Most (if not all) of the makers are happy to oblige and don't mind a challenge.

If you want a production model, I'll echo Grandmaster in recommending Bark River. Great knives, warranty, and company. Check out the Bravo 1.25 or Bravo 1.

I've got this coming in Saturday. Spyderco Sprig. It will be my light duty belt knife for camping. I think it would be great for lightweight backpacking.

BK 10, strip, the coating and get some micarta scales. Many great choices on the exchange.

I have to admit I'm new to 'Bark River Knives'; however, the example I have is a solidly made knife. BRK has a Lifetime Warranty, if you're into those types of things. And, it comes with an in-house produced, well-made Leather Sheath. They have a pretty good reputation on the InterWeb. I purchased a BRK 'BushCrafter' in CPM 3V steel at HRC 60. It's my first experience with 'Sintered Metal Technology' blade steel. The Jury is still out, I haven't had enough time with this new steel to arrive at any meaningful conclusions. Just what I've read on the InterWeb.

Overall, the BRK 'BushCrafter' is a nicely made knife with very good fit and finish. It comes out of the box very sharp.

I was able to buy the version I have, from 'Knives Ship Free'. Green Canvas Micarta Scales, Thumb-Jimping, and Scandi-Vex grind for $207.47 delivered. I received an additional $10 off when checking out using a 'Coupon Code' I found online. I think it was a good deal considering the MSRP is $289.95! Yikes!!

I can also recommend TOPS BOB 'BushCraft' knife. A well-made knife made with 1095 steel. Differentially Heat-Treated, HRC 56-58. Another solid performer at a lower price point. I purchased mine on Amazon for $128 shipped. The MSRP of this knife is around $180.

IMHO, both of these knives are well-made and will perform in the field as a general Field Craft, BushCraft, and Survival knife.
